Behind the first place running of Jacob Freeman, the Mustang Cross Country team finished in second place at the District meet held in Lubbock on Monday qualifying for the Regional Meet.
There were 40 total runners and they ran a 3 mile course. Coming in as the District Champion was Jacob Freeman with an outstanding time of 17:57.46!! He was followed by Alec Martinez 14th with a personal best of 19:55.45. Right behind him was Anthony Franco 16th 20:32.18, Jorge Ronquillo 19th 20:48.94, Spencer Freeman 22nd 21:00.49, Mario Guiterrez 26th 21:25.15, and Daniel Zurita 27th 21:33.93.
“These boys definitely each pulled their weight yesterday to get us in the top 3 to go to regionals,” Coach Celesta Garcia.
The Varsity girls didn’t have enough runners to compete as a team, but there were four runners who ran a very good race. There were 43 runners and they ran a 2 mile course. Running for the Fillies was Maria Aritza who finished 21st with a time of 14:44.42, Alazey Mishleau 15:59.08, Adamari Torres 16:26.62, and Madi Tuttle 16:28.50.
“It was the last race for seniors Maria and Alazey…they had a wonderful xc season considering they had to compete as individuals all season long. I’m very proud of them,” Coach Garcia added.
The JV girls didn’t have enough runners to compete as a team but still had 3 runners. There were 48 total runners and they ran a 2 mile course. Sydney Escalante was in the top 20 coming in at 18 with a time of 17:31.60. Next was Yareli Parra at 17:50.20, and Samantha Escalante at 19:52.52.
The JV boys also came home District Champs and they ran a 3 mile course. There were five boys medal as well. Julio Quintero came in first place and ran his best ever time of 21:04.46. He was followed by Michael Franco 6th place 25:38.97, Joaquin Quintero 7th 25:49.10, Nick Yanez 8th 25:51.87, and Kanton Galvan placed 10th 31:04.24. Manny Gonzales was right behind him with a time of 31:16.98 and Gustavo Gonzales 33:09.06.
The Fillie junior high girls competed very well yesterday in the hot sun. They ran a 2 mile course. There were 87 total runners and Mia Carmona placed 37th with a time of 17:20.64. Milka Murrieta was 38th with a time of 17:24.34 and Jolette Rodriguez was 39th with a time of 17:26.28. They were followed my Kylie Valenzuela 17:55.63, Braylon Flores 20:07.60, Jackie Silva 21:07.23, Kooper Dean 21:25.57, Natalie Zurita 22:32.67, and Leah Williamson 22:56.71.
The Mustang junior high boys came home as District Champs!!! There were 60 total runners and they ran a 2 mile course. Daniel Cineceros placed 3rd with a time of 12:45.52, Eleazor Sotelo placed 6th with a time of 12:53.03. Jonah Escalante was so close to a medal…he finished 11th with a time of 13:15.32. Braden Saenz was right behind him in 13th at 13:19.93. Then it was Johnathan Martinez 14:26.08, Marcos Rosas 14:31.31, Jesus Ortega 15:02.30, Hector Vanega 16:17.57, and Jacen Yanez 16:43.31.
“Please congratulate these runners when you see them. They have worked very hard this season and we are proud of each and every one of them,” Coach Garcia concluded.
The top 10 runners got medals and top 3 teams advanced to regionals.
The regional meet will take place Monday, October 28th in Lubbock.
