In their opening district match the Fillies were able to outlast a tough Brownfield team in three close sets on the Lady Cubs home court.
In the first of three sets the two teams exchanged points until the Fillies started pulling away with the score tied at 14-14 although the Lady Cubs managed to stay within striking distance. The Fillies soon found themselves up 24-19 after a Brownfield service error. Marley Jordan ended the first set 25-20 with a cross court kill to put the Fillies up one set.
The second set started with the Fillies jumping out to a commanding 9-0 lead which turned out to be the final margin. Jordan toed the line for those nine points before Brownfield finally got on the board. The two teams traded out points the remainder of that set before the Fillies finally claimed a 25-15 win.
With their backs to the wall, the Lady Cubs came out swinging in the third set. Brownfield went up 8-5 and 10-7 before the Fillies mounted a comeback tying things up at 11-11. Once again, the two teams battled at the net that resulted in a tied score at 18-18, 19-19, and 20-20. The Lady Cubs jumped out to a 23-20 lead before the Fillies came back with five straight points high lighted by a Lexi Ivy match ending kill.
Ivy managed 18 kills and three blocks in the Fillies 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 District 2-3A opener.
Jayleen Villareal notched 28 assists and 17 digs for the Fillies and Marley Jordon produced five aces, six kills, three blocks and 14 digs.
Moraima Villegas led the Fillies’ defensive effort with 18 digs.
The Fillies hosted Idalou on Tuesday and after an open Saturday will travel to Littlefield on Tuesday.
