Led by Josh Mills 21 points and balance scoring from the rest of his team, the Mustangs came up with their first district win with a 69-57 win over visiting Idalou Friday night.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 24-12 first-quarter lead and was able to maintain that 12 point difference throughout the rest of the game. The halftime Mustang lead was 40-28 and 53-43 heading into the final eight minutes.

The Wildcats opened the game with a 3-point basket for their only lead of the game. An Elias Yanez short jumper cut the lead to 3-2 and after Idalou upped their early lead to 5-2 Daron Pacheco followed with a shot from the free throw line and after Mills scored the next five points the Mustangs were up for good at 9-5. Another 5-0 Mustang run added to the earlier 5-0 run put Denver City up 14-5 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.

Baskets by Nick Rodriquez and Pacheco at the end of the quarter gave the Mustangs their 24-12 first-quarter lead and a short jumper by Branden Lewis gave the Mustangs their biggest lead of the game at 29-15 with five minutes left in the first half of play. The lead then grew to 33-17 after two Mills free throws. Idalou closed out the first half with an 11-7 run to cut the Mustangs lead to 40-28 at intermission.

Mills made two short jumpers followed by Yanez shot that helped the Mustangs build their lead back to 46-31. Idalou closed out the quarter 12-7 run to cut the DC lead to 53-43 heading into the final quarter of play.

A 3-point basket by the Wildcats to start the final eight minutes cut the lead to 53-46. The two teams traded points throughout the rest of the game for the final12 point Denver City win.

Behind Mills and his 21 points was Rodriquez with 16, Pacheco chipped in nine points, Nathaniel Cruz and Yanez both finished with seven points, Lewis had five points, and Nick Garza added two points. Following the Christmas break, the Mustangs were in the Littlefield tournament where they finished with a 1-2 record. They opened play with a 72-52 loss to Sundown followed by a 58-46 loss to Portales. They came back to defeat Friona 71-32 in the guaranteed third game.

The Mustangs will be in Slaton tomorrow night, Tuesday and will return home on Friday to host Littlefield. Next week they will travel to Roosevelt and return home on Friday to take on Brownfield.
