Much to the delight of a large Homecoming crowd, which included the Class of ’69 who were celebrating their 50th Reunion, the Mustangs had little trouble of handling a scrappy Reagan County team.
The Mustangs came up with 14 points in the first quarter and added 21 more in the second to carry a 35-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. They put the final touch on the shutout with 7 more in the third for the final 42-0 win.
Quarterback Mario Sanchez threw for three touchdowns and had one interception as the Mustangs claimed the easy win Friday night. He had nine completions in his 17 attempts for a season high 214 yards. He added 23 rushing yards on three carries that included a 25-yard scramble on a 4th and goal from the Owls 25-yard line. The Mustangs had set up shop on Reagan County’s four-yard line after a 55-yard reception from Alejandro Chavarria, but two penalties and a quarterback sack moved the ball all the way back to the 25.
Chavarria was the main receiver for the night as he caught three passes from Sanchez for 105 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez also found Uriel Rodriguez down the right-side line with no one within 20 yards of the speedy receiver that turned into a 64-yard touchdown reception. Aaron Mendoza caught the other scoring throw when he was on the receiving end of a 35-yard touchdown catch.
Added to his touchdown reception, Mendoza had a team-best 120 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries.
Playing in a reserve role in the 4th quarter Israel Gandara finished with 66 yards on nine carries and Michael Farrell added 23 yards on six carries. Also adding rushing yardage was Alexis Mendoza with 21 yards on just two carries.
Leonel Razo had two receptions for six yards, Erlon Lozano had one catch for two yards, and Aiden Shirley had one catch for two yards.
Chavarria also helped the Mustangs’ defense as he and Elias Yañez combined equally for 12 tackles and two quarterback sacks. RJ Hurtado added an interception.
The win upped the Mustangs season record to 5-1. They will close out their non-district schedule with a trip to high flying Crane on Friday. The Golden Cranes will be trying to defend their undefeated season.
