Mustangs Drop District Contest to Brownfield

Brownfield came up with 7 runs in the top of the 2nd inning and went on to defeat the Mustangs 15-5 in a district game that was stopped in the bottom of the 5th inning because of the 10-run rule.

After the Mustangs came up with one run in the bottom of the 1st inning the Cubs came back with their 7 runs in the top of the 2nd. The Mustangs came up with 2 in their half of the third to cut the lead to 7-3, but Brownfield plated 4 in both the 4th and 5th innings for the win.

James Chatham had a banner night going 3 for 3 at the plate and 2 RBI’s. Broedy Burris and Ivan Villarreal both had 2 hits while Braden McGary, Jeremy Castillo, and Isaac Yanez all had one hit.

McGary, Burris, and Yanez all finished with one RBI.

After having a perfect first inning Luis Rodriquez struggled in the 2nd inning giving up 7 runs on four hits. He had one strike out and issued two base on balls. Cameron Garcia came on in relief giving up the final 8 runs on 3 hits. He struck out five and walked five.

The Mustangs committed six errors that led to some of the Cubs runs.

The loss leaves them with a 4-5 district record.

They will travel to Slaton on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

Fillies Come Up Short Against Brownfield

A total of 11 errors proved to be too much for the Fillies to overcome as they dropped a 10-9 decision to Brownfield Friday on the Fillies home field.

With both teams coming in with an 8-1 record the Lady Cubs won the district title outright and will enter the playoffs as the number one seeded team with the Fillies going in as the number 2 seeded team.

Four Fillie errors in the 1st inning alone accounted for an early 2-0 Brownfield lead. Only a nifty double play started by third baseman Bailey Marin prevented more runs in the inning. After fielding a ground ball and throwing out the runner first baseman Heidi Gonzales then threw to catcher Hanna Gonzales to complete the 5-3-2 double play.

But Brownfield came right back in the top of the 2nd with 4 more runs aided by a single, double, and a triple along with the Fillies 5th error that plated the runs that now gave the Lady Cubs a 6-0 lead.

The Fillies finally got on the board in the third inning. With two outs Haleigh Gonzales and Jewell Santillan had back to back singles. Marin followed with a single to deep right/center field that plated Gonzales from 2nd for the first run.

In the 4th inning the Fillies added six runs to take a 7-6 lead. Hanna Gonzales got the inning started when she drew a walk to lead off. After Kathleen Chavez popped out to the short stop Johnna Hix followed with a ground rule double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.

Hanna scored on a pass ball, Hix advanced to third followed by a Kelsey De La Rosa walk putting runners on the corner with one out. With the bases loaded Marin followed with a Texas Leaguer just over the head of the short stop to bring in two more runs and now the Fillies were just down 6-4. Heidi Gonzales got hit by a pitch once again loading the bases followed by a Chavez hit that brought in two more that gave the Fillies their first lead.

Both teams went in order in their next two at bats before the Lady Cubs retook the lead with three runs in the top of the 6th that was aided by another 3 Fillie errors and now the Fillies were trailing 10-6.

Hix started a comeback in the bottom of the 7th inning with a walk followed by a De La Rosa double that put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Haleigh Gonzales plated one run with a single and after Santillan walked the bases were loaded once again. Marin grounded out to the pitcher, but the Fillies scored a run to cut the lead to 10-9. Heidi was intentionally walked to load the bases again, but Hanna Gonzales grounded out to short to end the game.

Haleigh Gonzales paced the Fillies with three hits, Marin had two, and Santillan, Hix, and De La Rosa all had one hit.

Marin had four RBI’s and Haleigh Gonzales, Chavez, Hix, and De La Rosa all had one RBI.

Santillan went the distance for the Fillies giving up 10 runs on 11 hits, struck out 2 and had no base on balls.

All 10 Brownfield runs were unearned.

The Fillies will now have a 2 of 3 series with Crane who finished 3rd in their district. Game one will be played in Crane at 6 pm on Thursday, game two will be in Denver City at 6 pm on Friday, and game 3, if necessary, will be played at Midland Christian on Saturday at 3 pm.
