The coaches in District 1-3A, Division I voted Friday morning to begin district play on Oct. 2, a week earlier than originally scheduled.
Teams will still maintain the order and locations that were previously set. If needed, a makeup game date is set for Nov. 6.
Lamesa, Brownfield, Slaton and Denver City had an open week scheduled for Oct. 2, while Shallowater was set to host Panhandle.
Instead, Brownfield will open district play by hosting Shallowater at 7 p.m. Oct. 2, while Slaton hosts Kermit and Lamesa travels to Denver City for the Mustangs’ Homecoming.
The decision comes three days after Shallowater announced it identified an offensive lineman who tested positive for COVID-19. Slaton had its second virus outbreak with the school district identifying high-risk exposures, announced on Sept. 8, and canceled its Week Three and Four contests. The Tigers will have one home game against Post on Sept. 25 before starting district action.
Brownfield, which canceled its scrimmage on Aug. 21 due to COVID-19, shut down all athletic activities last week due to an offensive lineman testing positive for the novel coronavirus. The Cubs resumed practices on Monday.
