Don Jones, 69, died Saturday, March 17, 2018, in Abilene.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Culwell officiating. Family Visitation will be Wednesday, March 21, 2018, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Adams-Graham Funeral Home.
Born April 4, 1948, in Abilene, Don was a son of the late Tony and Lenore (Thackerson) Jones. He lived and worked on the family cotton farm north of Anson until graduation from Anson High School. Don felt led to the Ministry and enrolled in Hardin-Simmons University. He married his high school sweetheart, Nan Vaughn, December 23, 1968, and they had one daughter, Jaye Janan.
During his ministry, Don served Minister of Music and Education at Rotan Calvary Baptist Church, Hawley First Baptist Church, Coleman First Baptist Church, Stratford First Baptist Church, Carlsbad, N.M. Hillcrest Baptist Church and Denver City First Baptist Church. He left the ministry due to health issues and returned to Anson. Don entered the field of journalism and started the area-wide publication Farm and Ranch News and wrote sports articles for the Western Observer Newspaper. He became Editor of the Western Observer and later purchased the Paper.
Even though he had many health problems, he continued his education receiving a Masters Degree and Doctoral degree both in Journalism.
Don was preceded in death by her parents (Tony and Lenore Jones), grandparents (Emmitt and Lizzie Thackerson and N.W. and Daisy Jones).
Don is survived by one daughter, Jaye and her boyfriend Richard Gladden of Merkel; a brother, Hal Jones (and wife, Karen) Terrell; two grandchildren, Alexis and Austin Escobar of Merkel; nephew, Travis Jones of Abilene; his extended family Elaine Vaughn Bennett (and husband, Jerry), Brian Bennett (and wife, Carley), Jerry “Bo” Vaughn (and wife, Sandy), Jeffri Vaughn Orosco (and husband, Tony), Joe Hensley (and wife, Julie), Wade Wright (and wife, Becky) and his primary caregiver, Nan Priddy (and husband, John).
