It doesn’t seem like we voted very long ago, which was about six months ago. However it’s time to vote again. This election cycle is for the municipal or local elections such as city councils, school boards, hospital board etc. Those that run for these positions do not have to run under a specific political party affiliation. Most municipal elections do not have the turnout like the November General Elections, and this year’s Municipal Election looks to be the same.
There were a total of 19 positions opened throughout the different municipal entities in Terry County. Of the 19 open positions there will be two local/municipal elections this cycle. One of which is for the Brownfield City Council District 5 seat, and the other will be the three Meadow ISD At-Large seats. Here is the list of positions that were open to file for.
List of position for filing:
Brownfield ISD: 2 School Trustees – At Large, which are currently held by Cat Gonzales and Will Hawkins. Both incumbents Gonzales and Hawkins have refiled for their positions and there will not be an election for these positions.
Wellman-Union CISD: 2 School Trustees – At Large, which are currently held by Gabe Neill and Jace Moore. Both incumbents filed for the same positions and there will not be an election for these positions.
City of Meadow: 3 Council Members – At Large which are currently held by Lynn Carrol, Everett McArthur, and Kandace Keesee-Welch. Each Incumbent filed for the same position and there will not be an election for these positions.
City of Wellman: Mayor, & Council Members – Places 2 & 4. Place 2 was held by Sally Rodriguez. The Mayor seat is currently held by Naomi Garnsey and Council Member Place 4 is held by Seth Hollowell. Council Member Place 2 is currently vacant and the council has not currently appointed a person to that seat after the death of Sally Rodriguez. Incumbent Mayor Naomi Garnsey, Council Member Place 4 Seth Hollowell have refiled. Carma Spuhler has filed for Council Member Place 2. There will not be an election for these positions.
Brownfield Regional Medical Center (BRMC) has 2 Directors – At Large seats open which are currently held by June Cooper and Brian Paiva. Both Incumbent Director June Cooper and Brian Paiva has refiled for their positions on the BRMC Board of Directors. There will not be an election for these positions.
Meadow ISD: 3 School Trustees – At Large, which are currently held by Daniel Harrington, Jody Woodard, and Ruben Villapando. All three incumbents filed to run for the same seats, and Chris Castilleja also filed creating a contested election.
For the City of Brownfield there are four council seats up for election. District 4 which is held by Michelle Cooper, District 5 which is held by Eric Horton, and the two At-Large positions which one is held by Chuck Nave and the other is held by Isaiah Bautista who was appointed to the position in November after the Mayoral Election took place.
Current Mayor Tom Hesse had held that position until he was elected as mayor in November 2020. Isaiah Bautista and Michael Tackitt have filed for the two Council Member At-Large seats.
Incumbent Councilwoman Michelle Cooper has refiled for District 4.
Incumbent Councilman Eric Horton has refiled for District 5 and will be contested by Julian Silva Hernandez.
And the Meadow ISD election, which garnered four candidates for three at large positions. As stated above, all three incumbents filed, plus newcomer Chris Castilleja.
This years 2021 Municipal General Election will be held on Saturday May 1, 2021. Early voting begins Monday April 19, 2021, and runs through Friday April 23, 2021 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday April 26, 2021 and Tuesday April 27, 2021 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Early voting locations will be held at the Terry County Annex, 507-A W. Main in Brownfield, Meadow Community Center, 904 1st St. in Meadow, and Wellman-Union CISD, 5th & Terry in Wellman.
