Early voting for the upcoming May 4 election came to a close on Tuesday, April 30, in both Denver City and Plains.
Starting on April 22 voters have had a two-week time period to cast their vote in both communities. In Denver City, four candidates are running for the three spots on the Council City. Incumbents Joan Breith, Ronald Weir and Robert Hanneman all filed for another term of office. Former DC Chief of Police Jack Miller also filed for a position. The three candidates receiving the highest number of votes will on the City Council.
Things are much different in the County capital where Plains will be having two elections in both the City Council and the School Board. In the school board election, there are two races. Running for Place 2 are Curtis Williams, Richard Gonzales, and Pat Hogue. Running for Place 7, which is at large, are Vee Ann Carter (incumbent) and Juan Posadas.
In the Plains City Council Election, there are three positions available and four candidates are seeking those positions. Candidates running for those positions include Debbie Smith (incumbent), Christy Martin (incumbent), Elsa Moya (incumbent), and Karen Williams. After being appointed to fill an unexpired term on the City Council Robert Whitfield is running for the remainder of that term and is unopposed.
The term of office for one candidate on the Denver City City Council will be three years while the other two will serve a two-year term. Last year the Council unanimously approved changing the length of office from two years to three years. It was put on the ballot for the voters to decide on the November 7 election where voters approved the change 142-97.
