December 4, 1941 – January 16, 2022

Emily Simpson, age 80, passed away on January 16, 2022, in Georgetown, Texas.

Emily was born on December 4, 1941, in Brownfield, Texas to Bill and Beatrice Blackstock. She attended Gomez and Brownfield schools. She became a Christian at age 9 at the Gomez Baptist Church. By then, Emily was already driving by herself to church down the dirt roads to play the piano for the congregation. Emily graduated from both Brownfield High School and Baylor University.

Emily married Doyle Simpson in Brownfield on June 21, 1964 in the yard of her childhood home. Emily wrote, “Doyle has been a wonderful husband, and I have always admired him for standing strong in his Christian faith.”

Emily taught in the Brownfield schools and then stayed home with her daughters Laura and Amy when they were young. She taught English, history, and reading at Brownfield High School.   Emily said,  “I have many fond memories of teachers and students from this time.”

Her first love and priority was her family. She wrote, “I have loved being close to my parents, sisters, nieces, and nephews throughout my life.”

Emily often volunteered at church. She taught 1st grade Sunday School at First Baptist Brownfield for many years. In her teaching position, she enjoyed working with Avis Farrar and Anna Lee Dumas.  It was very meaningful to her when her daughter and one nephew came to accept Christ during the time she was their Sunday School teacher. For many years in  Brownfield, Emily also worked with the Terry County Historical Commission.

Emily and Doyle moved to Georgetown in 2002. They joined First Baptist Georgetown. Emily volunteered with the Merry Christmas with Love and Stamping ministries. She especially loved being part of the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Committee.   Emily loved volunteering to read weekly to classrooms at Annie Purl Elementary, where Amy is a librarian. Emily always enjoyed sharing her love of reading and adopting classrooms at Annie Purl.  The Oak Ridge Ministry held a very special place in her heart, and she was proud to support this ministry.

Emily was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Donna Blackstock; and husband, Doyle. Emily is survived by her daughters Laura (Jim) of Belton and Amy of Georgetown; grandson Josh and granddaughter Rebecca; two sisters, Mary Jane Jackson and Billie Faught of Brownfield; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Emily wrote, “God has given me much joy and happiness on Earth. I look forward to seeing Him in Heaven.”
