The Fillies split their last two district games closing out the first half of district play.

On Saturday the Fillies lost to state ranked Levelland 10-1 on the Fillies home field before traveling to Brownfield on Tuesday and leaving with a convincing 21-9 win.

In the Levelland game the Fillies were held hitless throughout the game even though they were able to come up with a run. Things were tight until the top of the 7th inning when the Lady Loboettes erupted for seven runs to put the game away.

Levelland opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning before coming back with a single run in the third inning. The Fillies scored their lone run in the bottom half of the third inning and were trailing 3-1 after six innings of play.

But in the top of the seventh inning Levelland took advantage of three base on balls, two Fillie errors and one hit batsman to score their seven runs on just three hits.

Jewell Santillan started the game and Haleigh Gonzales came on in the fifth inning to pitch the last three innings.

Things were much different in Brownfield on Tuesday as the Fillies did battle with the Lady Cubs and Mother Nature who continued throwing curve balls at both teams throughout the game.

After Brownfield took a 4-1 lead after three innings of play the Fillies came up with five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Brownfield countered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up at 6-6 when the Fillies exploded for seven runs in the

top of the 6th and eight more in the top of the 7th to go up 21-8 after the Lady Cubs scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th. The Lady Cubs scored one more run in their half of the 7th inning for the final 21-9 score.

The Fillies finished with 15 total hits which included doubles by Haleigh Gonzales, Johnna Hix, Hanna Gonzales, Jewel Santillan, Haylee Villarreal (2), and Heidi Gonzales (2). Kat Chavez took advantage of the high winds by sending a fast ball solo homerun over the leftfield fence to lead off the five run 4th inning.

The Fillies sent 10 batters to the plate in both the 6th and 7th innings when they scored 15 of their 21 runs.

RBI’s were recorded by Haleigh Gonzales (3), Johnna Hix (2), Hanna Gonzales, Kathleen Chavez, Jewel Santillan (4), Denisse Saenz, Haylee Villarreal (2), Julie Barrientes, and Heidi Gonzales (3).

Jewel Santillan went the distance on the mound giving up 9 runs on 10 hits, had five strikeouts and two base on balls. Because of 8 Fillie errors only one of their 9 runs were earned.

With the win the Fillies improved to 3-2 in district play. They traveled to Estacado on Friday and then will make the short trip to Seminole on Tuesday before returning home on Friday when the host Lamesa in a 12 noon first pitch time.
