Gabe Neill, who farms in the Wellman area, had the first bale of cotton ginned in Terry County for 2021.
The bale was ginned at about 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 11, at Southwest Cotton Growers Gin in Wellman.
The bale weighed in at 498 pounds and was grown on Gabe’s home place just east of Wellman. The cotton was planted on May 18 and is Stoneville 5707.
Gabe stated, “Everything so far is really turning out pretty good. We are excited to have a year like this one.”
Kenny Underwood, manager of the gin, showed off some lint collected from one of Gabe’s modules. “This hasn’t even gone through the gin and it is as clean as can be, before we even run through our cleaners.”
It looks to be a really good year for area cotton farmers. The rains were timely. Otherwise, the weather was good for producing cotton. And prices are higher right now than they have been in some time. Look for smiles on the faces of area farmers, who are finally seeing a bit of good news for a change.
Congratulations to Gabe on having Terry County’s first bale for 2021!
