Health Nuts StoryTime at Yoakum County Library in Plains

by admin

sickThe Yoakum County Library in Plains hosted a healthy StoryTime on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

With a few kiddos out sick, the theme was applicable. Those in attendance were Ariyel, Brit, Elijah, Tabitha, Selah, Kefira, Gabe, Tirzah, and Moriah.

Following the calendar activities and the pledges, the group surrounded Library Director, Pat McNabb, for the Texas symbol and science presentation. The children learned about pecans, the state tree as well as also holding the title of Texas’ state health nut. Mrs. McNabb also showed the children the science experiment “Elephant’s Toothpaste” but the catalyst was expired so the same lesson will be repeated next week.

The group discussed sickness with the aid of a couple of books: “Germs Are Not for Sharing” and “Eat a Rainbow: Healthy Foods.” These books educated the youngsters on what germs are and how to stay healthy by washing your hands and eating a variety of colored fruits and veggies. The next book read was Mo Willems’ “Pigs Make Me Sneeze.”  This is a fun book from a popular series that incorporates allergy/cold sneezes. Then the children selected bandanas to use in the song “The Bubbles in the Sink!”

The next book on the list was “Bear Feels Sick” by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman. It is a sweet story in a favorite series. The last book was also in a well-loved series: “Llama Llama Home with Mama.” Both of these last books helped the group discuss how to keep germs to ourselves so that friends and parents don’t get sick too!

The next meeting is Wednesday, February 1 when the theme will be hibernation.

The following week—Wednesday, February 8—will be the group’s Valentine’s Day Love Party. Caregivers are asked to bring a snack to share with the group (about 12-18 children) and also Valentines to distribute to all Library Friends. The third week in February, the Yoakum County Sheriff’s Department will join us in a safety program.

All Family StoryTimes at the Yoakum County Library in Plains are free for all ages of children and their caregivers. For more information, call 456-8725.
