Recent DCHS graduate Holly Hemmeline added one more honor in her trophy case after she was named the Lubbock Avalanche Journal Lone Star Varsity girls volleyball Player of the Year in ceremonies held in Lubbock on Wednesday, June 5.
Hemmeline delivered off the court in a leadership role and on it as a hitter with an area-best 570 kills plus 43 blocks, 78 aces and 568 digs for a Fillies team that went 40-3 and reached the 3A area semifinals. These stats earned her the volleyball player of the year.
Head Fillie volleyball coach Megan David had nothing but praises for Holly. “We are definitely going to miss her,” Coach David said. “She brought so much to each team she played on; competitiveness, leadership, guidance, knowledge, and being a role model off and on the court.”
This is not the only time Holly has been recognized by Lone Star Varsity sports. Last year she was the Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the Lone Star Varsity Girls Athlete of the Year as well as a volleyball first-teamer.
Coach David, who came to Denver City 32 years ago, has built a program that is one of the area’s best year after year. This past season the Fillies had an area best record of 40-3 before being eliminated in the Regional Quarterfinals by longtime rival Bushland. She was also named as the Lone Star Varsity Coach of the Year as a result of her outstanding record this past season.
The Fillies are hoping to repeat their 2015 state trip with many of the team returning this year which includes juniors Lexi Ivy and Marley Jordon along with senior Jayleen Villarreal.
Holly’s plans for next year …. She will be attending the University of Texas at the Permian Basin where she will be playing basketball.
She will be taking four years of varsity basketball with her. She helped lead her team into the playoffs every year she was on varsity and even to the state tournament last year.
“I love her and she will be missed, but at the same time I can’t wait to see what the next chapter of her life brings and the plans God has in store for her,” Coach David concluded.
We all wish Holly the best in her future. She will be representing Denver City and the Fillies with pride as she moves forward in life.
