Herbert Newell O’Neal

ODESSA – Herbert Newell O’Neal, age 83, of Odessa, TX passed away on July 2, 2018, in Odessa.

Herbert was born October 3, 1934, to Herbert C. O’Neal and Clementine (Vaught) O’Neal in Brownfield, TX. He served in the United States Airforce from 1951-1952. In 1950 he married Peggy J. Gamble. They remained married until her passing in 1993. He then married Patsy R. Furstenburg in 1995. They remained married until her passing in 2008. Herbert worked for 22 years at Schlumberger, where he helped design, build and operate the Ellenburger Express, wireless rig that logged deep wells more than 35,000 feet in Oklahoma and Texas. He retired and moved to Cloudcroft, NM where he worked as an EMT and Ambulance Attendant. Later, he drove coast to coast hauling produce. He was the owner/operator/driver in Oilfield Hauling. Herbert lived in Cookson, OK for 8 years retired.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter. His hobbies were boating, sand buggies, jeeps, motorcycles, flying and delivering airplanes and sports cars. Herbert served as a Volunteer Fireman and Fire Marshall in Monahans, TX.

Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Clementine O’Neal; his daughter that passed in 2014, Nancy Cathlene Groff and his sister, Carol Warlick of Slaton, TX.

He is survived by his children, Michael G. O’Neal of Odessa, Tony L. O’Neal of Odessa, Sally A. Lara of Kermit; brother, Ray O’Neal of Raleigh, NC; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Graveside Services will be at 9:00 AM, Friday, July 6, 2018, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Reverend Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
