Hero Classic First Pitch Tournament will open Brownfield Sports Complex

The long awaited “First Pitch” at the Brownfield Sports Complex will finally take place on Friday, September 11, at 6 p.m.

Brownfield native Jeremy Franco has been working hard putting together a softball tournament for the weekend. No less than 45 teams of girls’ softball will converge on Brownfield and the Complex for opening weekend.

Jeremy is calling this tournament the “Hero Classic” for one reason. “It is all about 9/11 and the sacrifices made on that day for us and for the continuing sacrifices of our First Responders.” The tournament will run from Friday, September 11 – Sunday, September13. The action will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and games are scheduled through midnight each day until Sunday afternoon.

The tournament will be a 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 16 -18 year old girls tourney. Teams are coming from Albuquerque, Amarillo, Midland-Odessa, Abilene, San Angelo, and Lubbock, among other places. Of course Brownfield will be fielding a team. Also, many Brownfield athletes play on traveling squads from other cities, so expect to see lots of local girls taking the field.

Jeremy stated, according to what he has been told, “All motels are booked in Brownfield for the weekend.” These folks will also be in our restaurants and stores, as well! Great for our economy!

The first pitch, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday will be accompanied by the Brownfield Police Department Color Guard presenting the colors.

As an added bonus, the American Legion will be on hand cooking up free hot dogs and all the fixings to those in attendance. Don’t you just love it when a whole community can come together!

Official tournament shirts will be on sale for $20, so don’t miss that. The first tournament in our brand new facility deserves a shirt commemorating that.

Jeremy stated, “These are just beautiful facilities. There will be no gate fee, so I hope people will come out and watch these girls play and see what a great complex we have. This is the kind of complex we usually see in the bigger cities. I am really proud of this place.”

Jeremy also stated that he did not accomplish putting this tournament together alone. “I want to thank my spouse Alisha, Julie Rodriguez of USSSA, the City of Brownfield, City Council, Jeff Davis, Scott Jackson and certainly my parents, David and Rachel Franco.”

This is going to be a great weekend of softball, honoring our wonderful First Responders and “breaking the plastic” off the new Sports Complex! Don’t miss out!
