Patrick Mahomes agreed to the richest contract extension in sports history with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday. Over the 10-year deal, he will have the opportunity to earn $503 million dollars.
That is more money than anyone can ever think of spending in their lifetime. One may ask just how much the 2018 MVP and reigning Super Bowl Champion signal caller is receiving.
ESPN’s social media team did the math, and determined that Mahomes will make $1.60 per second, $96 per minute, $5,472 per hour and $137,808 per day from now until the end of his contract.ADVERTISING
Fresh off two seasons as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, winning the 2018 NFL MVP and earning the Super LIV MVP, Mahomes is already in the conversation for best player in the league. In 31 starts, Mahomes is 24-7, completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 9,412 yards and 76 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. He has added 110 rushing attempts for 500 yards (4.5 average) and four touchdowns.
Selected by the Chiefs with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mahomes is a two-time Pro Bowl pick and one-time selection to the All-Pro first team. Mahomes starred at Texas Tech from 2014-16, completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns to 29 interceptions in 32 games. He also took 308 carries for 845 yards (2.7 average) and 22 touchdowns.
“Chiefs Kingdom, you’ve been with me since the beginning,” Mahomes said in a video confirming the extension. “From rookie year to becoming a starter, to the unconventional, to doing whatever it takes to win, to showdowns.
“You helped me come back from injury. You helped us come back from deficits — multiple deficits. You helped us overcome adversity to become Super Bowl champs. And we’re staying together for a long time. We’re chasing a dynasty.”
Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins had high praise for Mahomes in a Tuesday morning appearance on ESPN’s morning program ‘Get Up.’ Watkins certainly thinks the most recent Chiefs Super Bowl win won’t be the last.
“When you talk about Pat Mahomes, you’re talking about somebody that is one of the best players, arguably, like LeBron James, like Tom Brady,” Watkins said. “When you’re speaking about dynasties, I think possibly it’s time to win three or four, five, six Super Bowls.
“We have the team, we have the coaches, we have one of the best GMs in the game and a 10-year contract. They’re going to have everything set up around a guy like him with his caliber. I think for lightyears he’s going to dominate this league. This is his league now. The torch is being passed and I think it’s something special you’re going to see for the next 10 years, 20 years that he’s playing in the NFL.”
