Job Fair Coming To Brownfield, “BROWNFIELD WORKS!”

by Eric

When the State of Texas decided last month to shutdown the TDCJ Jim Rudd Unit in Brownfield, this got Brownfield Industrial Development Corporation (BIDCorp) Director Brian Brisendine thinking there needed to be some type of job fair right here in Brownfield. Brisendine stated he felt this was needed and with the closure of the Rudd Unit, this might be the right time to have a local job fair. Brisendine has brought on board three other sponsors to help get this job fair off the ground and to be successful. Brownfield ISD, Workforce Solutions of the South Plains, and Brownfield Chamber of Commerce will be involved with this endeavor.

Brisendine said, “This will become an annual event, and its open to anyone who is able to work. We want people to know that there are lots of job opportunities awaiting folks.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor the problem with the unemployment or lack of workforce is that people don’t want t go back to work after the 2020 pandemic benefits helped them out so much. Although the national unemployment rate is sitting at 4.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported job
growth was widespread, with notable job gains in leisure and hospitality, in professional and business
services, in manufacturing, and in transportation and warehousing. Employment in public education
declined over the month.

Even though the unemployment rate edged down to 4.6 percent in October, the number of unemployed persons is estimated
at 7.4 million, and it continues to trend down. At the same time, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor, there is an estimated 10.4 million job opening in the US. That means there three million more jobs than those looking. Both measures are down considerably from their highs at the end of the February-April 2020 recession. However, they remain above their levels prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (3.5 percent and 5.7 million, respectively, in February 2020).

“It’s really amazing how many employment opportunities that are out there and we want to help get Brownfield and of course Terry County back to work.” said Brisendine. As of Tuesday Nov. 9, 2021 BIDCorp had 21 entities that will be on hand at the job fair. Brisendine said, “We have 21 right now, however I am sure there will be more than that when the event takes place.”

Here is a list of those entities that will be at the job fair:

  • Judy Besler – Farmers Insurance
  • Brownfield Regional Medical Center (BRMC)
