Johnny Appleseed Visits StoryTime at Plains Yoakum County Library

by Eric

johnny-appleseed-2016In celebration of John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed) and his birthday, StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains had an apple-solutely good time on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

The warm-up activities of pledges, calendar counting, and the “Days of the Week” song kept the group engaged. A favorite song “Five Little Hot Dogs” was actively enjoyed. Then Director & Head Librarian, Pat McNabb, introduced science to the group through the propulsion experiment. (Each child took a balloon home to recreate the science.)

The felt board story called “Ten Red Apples” was used as the children helped propel the apples off the tree by acting as the force of wind. “The Apple Tree,” a finger play, helped the group get rid of their wiggles before sitting to enjoy a monologue by pretend-guest Johnny Appleseed.

After the biography of the apple pioneer was complete, the new book “What’s an Apple” by Marilyn Singer was shared.

A song called “My Cat’s Got Fleas” (by Andy Mason) was played from CD as the youngsters enacted the fleas’ finding their toes, shoulders, heads, etc. A newly-released book by bestselling artist Derek Anderson titled “Ten Hungry Pigs” was read and thoroughly liked.

The video selection was Walt Disney’s classic of Johnny Appleseed. Then the traditional “Wave Goodbye” rhyme was said, and dried apple slices were handed out to willing (and hungry) little people.

Each left with a goodie bag and a few were the winners of the monthly door prize drawing. Hope Simpson won “The Dot.” Alan Morales won “Kindergarten ABC’s.” “Miss Nelson Has a Bad Day” was won by David Wiebe, and Agatha Harms won the WordWorld activity book.

Those in attendance today were Payton Blair; Hope, Lanie, & Abigail Simpson; Jacob Wiebe; Levi Fehr; Brit McAdams; Abbie & Hudson Lollar; Case Bearden; Tabitha, Kefira, Aspen, Elijah, Selah, & Gabe Blessing; Bryson John Vargas; Cecilia Marquez Erozo; Agatha Harms; Jazzmine & Rylee Loera; and Sophia & Olivia Lopez.

Family StoryTime meets at the Yoakum County Library in Plains at 10:00 a.m. each Wednesday during the regular school year. All ages are welcome.
