Denver City July 4th Celebration

7-4-16 Cow Chip Bingo CowIn spite of hot temperatures that hovered around the 100-degree mark, a large crowd came out and celebrated the 4th of July with several activities at the Stuffy Moorhead Park.

In addition to the activities that involved both the young and the old, there was a car show and a 3-team golf scramble held at the Yoakum County Golf Course.

Starting with the basketball free throw contest, which was coordinated by Stan and Clancy David, with help for the student ambassadors, the winners in the 12-18 age bracket were 1st Jacob Freeman, 2nd Kristopher Kostedt, and 3rd Jose Nunez. In the 11 and Under division the winners were 1st Davarian Rosemond, 2nd was Spencer Freeman and 3rd was Brody Pence.

In the Sack Race the winners in the 12-18 division was 1st was Robert, 2nd went to Ryker, and the 3rd place winner was Scott. In the 11 and Under division the 1st place winner was Kamery, 2nd place went to Anthony, and winning 3rd place was Michael.

Winners in the 3-Legged Race in the 12-18 division was in 1st place the team of Luke and Cole, 2nd place went to Scott and his Dad, and the 3rd place winner was Kristopher and Ryker. In the 11 and Under Division 1st place went to Yuridia & Dayna, 2nd place winners were Nkayah and Kordeah, and the 3rd place winners were Michael and Kamery.

Results from the Human Hungry Hippo Contest was finishing in 1st place in the 12-18 division was Sherlyn & Daniel, 2nd place winners were Kevin & Xihaly, and 3rd place went to Nathaniel & Dyla. In the 11 and Under division the 1st place winner was Miranda & Kordee, 2nd place went to Yuridia & Dayanara, and the 3rd place winners were Jan & Joel.

“The Coordinators for our Children’s Games each year are the Chamber Student Ambassadors,” Chamber Manager Marilyn McCurley said. “Their work at the July 4th Celebration is part of their community service to qualify for a $500 scholarship at the end of the school year.”

The new Student Ambassadors for this year are Tommie Lynn Hicks, Xylena Pillai, & Denisse Saenz.  They begin their service in their Junior year on March 1st at the beginning of the Chamber’s fiscal year and will end the following year at the end of February.

In the Horseshoe Tournament, six teams participated, 1st place winners were Ben Valles and Mario Sanchez, 2nd place went to Manuel Garcia and David Delgado, and the 3rd place winners were from the team of Fred and Steve Jacundie.

James Martinez was the coordinator for this event.

And in the Volleyball tournament, which was coordinated by Shearon Hawkins and Maneka Rosemond, and had seven teams competing, including three from Hobbs and four from Denver City, 1st place went to Alpha. Members of this team were Jaycee Billings, Chanie Wingo, Christian Herrera, Pepe Ayala, Luis Vega, Macey Garcia.

The 2nd place winners was the Legacy team. This team consisted of Macey Garcia, Destiny Rosemond, Chanie Wingo, Jaycee Billings, and Shearon Hawkins.

And the 3rd place finisher was the team of the Stars. Playing on this team was Virginia Trinidad, Leandro Trinidad, Katie Reyna, Lorena Cervantes, James Chatham, and Danny Garcia.

Results for the 3-Man Golf scramble included:

Championship Flight: 1st Place the team of Chance Nichols, Chase Concatelli, and Chris Dagley (55), 2nd was Ladell Stinnett, James Stinnett, and Joe Lopez (57), and 3rd was Alex Cruz, Ryan Sanders, and Bryce Green (57).

President’s Flight: 1st was Justin Swimmer, Junior Lira, and Ernest Hilburn (61), 2nd was George, Liza, and Brad Boynton (61), and 3rd was Richard, Gilbert, and Ed Espinoza (62).

First Flight: 1st was Saul Tovar, Marcus Tovar, and Jerry Boggs (63), 2nd was Jake Depew, Joe Kay, and Colt Clinton (63), and 3rd was the team of Brad Taylor, Noe Valencia, and Amaio Garcia (63).

Second Flight: 1st was Rodney, Roger, and Robert Garcia (67), 2nd was Tona Nelson, Ricky and Charlotte Terrell (67), and 3rd was Max Proctor, Shelly Fort, and John Fredlund (67).

Third Flight: 1st was Oscar Garcia, Jonathan Lira, and Zack Ramon (70), 2nd was Cleve Bearden, Bob Smith, and Patrick Hamilton (70), and 3rd was Chris Richards, Jay Morginson, and Eric Martinez (72).

Closest to the Pin winners on all Par 3 holes were: #3 Robert Hernandez, #6 Shelly Fort, #10 Pablo Chavez, #12 Alex Cruz, and #16 Howard Varley.

Back at the park and the annual Cow Chip bingo the winner of $1,000 was Kevin Eastteam.

The park was the place to be for the day long activities which included several vendors.  These attractions were Arts and Crafts, home accessories, and several food booths.

The day was capped off with the annual Fire Works display at the Yoakum County Park. Cars lined the highway and several citizens took advantage of a perfect night by bringing their lawn chairs and enjoyed a beautiful display of fireworks to celebrate America’s 240th Birthday.

The Fireworks was sponsored by Golden Spread Electric Generating, Inc. (Mustang Station), Production Downhole Services, Glen and Charlotte Stroud, and Shooting Arrow Fireworks.

Chamber Manager Marilyn McCurley was very instrumental in organizing the annual event and had the help of many volunteers who made sure all events went off without a hitch.
