Kids Vote for Favorite Food at Yoakum County Library in Plains

vote-winnerWith a rainy outlook on the horizon, a group gathered on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at the Yoakum County Library in Plains for the theme of “Your Vote Counts!”

After pledges and calendar activities, Library Director Pat McNabb presented a science experiment of patriotic red “GAK.” The children sat enthralled and enjoyed touching the elastic polymer. Two children’s names were drawn for the Gak door prize; those winners were Lanie Simpson and Kefira Blessing.

The first book on the food-vote topic was “Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin. To accompany the taco literature, the action song “Spicy Salsa” was performed in an abbreviated fashion. The next book was “Everybody Likes Pizza” written by Yoakum-County-Library-Summer-Reading-guest Andy Mason. “Pizza Man, Pizza Man” action rhyme was recited by the youngsters.

The last book was from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems, “I Really Like Slop.” After the story ended, each child got to cast their vote for their favorite food: slop like Piggie, pizza like Andy’s cat, or tacos like dragons. As each child—ages ranging from 1 to 10—picked a card with the corresponding food item, he or she deposited the “vote” into the custom-made ballot box. Each voice will be heard and the tally will be announced on the library’s Facebook page on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, at noon.

A Scholastic video clip, “Otto Runs for President,” was an appropriate selection and then the children were dismissed with the action rhyme “Wave Good-bye.”

All ages are welcome at the Family StoryTime, which meets weekly at the Yoakum County Library in Plains at 10 AM each Wednesday. The group will not meet on November 23 and November 30.

Those in attendance were Abigail, Hope, & Lanie Simpson; Elijah, Tabitha, Selah, Kefira, Aspen, & Gabe Blessing; Levi Fehr; Brit & Ben McAdams; Bryson Vargas; and Jorge Francisco.
