The Brownfield Lady Cubs have moved up to #5 in the state’s prestigious TABC poll right before they take on the fourth-place team Presidio out of Dist. 4-3A in their Bi-District playoff matchup. The Lady Cubs not only moved up in the polls, but also won an outright district title Friday night when they traveled up north to Littlefield beating the Lady Cats 61-32.
The Lady Cubs finished district undefeated 12-0 and finished the regular season 22-1, with their lone loss to #10 5A Amarillo High. Now Brownfield has an opportunity to begin the post season and they hope it leads to a state championship. However, with eight top 25 teams in Region I-3A it will not be easy.
Road to the post season
So how did they get here? Last season the Lady Cubs posted their best playoff run in many years making it all the way to the Region I Quarterfinals taking on district foe Idalou. The Lady Cubs would lose that game but would become more prepared for this season.
After the biennial UIL realignments the Lady Cubs would change districts keeping Littlefield and Denver City but lost Idalou and Shallowater. So, this year’s district was not stacked like last years and this helped pave the way for a district title.
This season began really well right out of the gate for the Lady Cubs. Their first game of the season was a win over #1 TAPPS 4A Lubbock Christian, 71-48. The Lady Cubs would then go on a 7-game winning streak beating four 5A teams, two 4A teams and a state ranked 2A team of New Home 65-39. They would end up taking on #10 5A Amarillo High in their ninth game of the season and would fall 81-57 ending their winning streak.
After the loss to AHS, they would begin district action and become 3-0 really quick taking down Dimmitt 54-19, Friona 101-17, and Muleshoe 58-20. Brownfield would take a small break from district play however the Lady Cubs would take on 4A Snyder winning 62-47 and 5A Randall winning 69-67.
After the Christmas break the Lady Cubs would get back to business in district upending Denver City 96-32 and continue their winning streak beating Littlefield 73-38, and finished out the first round of district beating Lamesa 73-30.
The second round of district action was like the first. They began with another win over Friona 77-12, Muleshoe 68-27, Denver City 76-43, Dimmitt 76-20, Lamesa 81-19, and the final game of district was Littlefield winning 61-32 going 12-0 in district and winning an outright district title.
The Lady Cubs have catapulted themselves into another post season and first up is bi-district with them taking on Presidio in Pecos on Thursday evening Feb. 11, 2021 with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff. If the Lady Cubs are to come away with a win, they have the possibility of avenging their regional quarterfinal loss to Idalou in the second round of the playoffs if Idalou can beat Spearman.
The Lady Cubs averaged 70 points per game in regular season and look for them to leave Pecos as Bi-District Champs, maybe even scoring 100 points.
