The #6 ranked Lady Cubs kept their record perfect on Tuesday with a four set win over the 4A #7 ranked Lady Mustangs from Andrews. The Lady Cubs dropped the first set 21-25, but then swept the next three 25-22, 25-17, and 25-22.
Meriah Gonzalez had 16 kills to lead Brownfield, followed up by Tia and Deja Johnson with 10 and 11 kills, respectively.
Alexis Herrera had nine digs, followed by Madison Hord with seven.
It was a tough battle all night long. Andrews was a very good team and well coached, but the battle belonged to the Lady Cubs one more time.
First year Head Coach Mallorie Ellis stated, “The girls worked really hard for that win. They have had a tough weekend and had a few days off, but they really worked hard at practice Monday to get ready for the game. Andrews knew the twins have been our scorers and Meriah really stepped up to help. The girls never stopped swinging, even though they got blocked a couple of times. We served well and that helped us get their offense out of sync. I am extremely proud of them.”
The Lady Cubs will travel to Midland Greenwood on Saturday to face Greenwood and Wall in a dual match. They will open district play on September 22 at Friona.
