The Lady Cubs started the second half of district play with a trip to Slaton on Tuesday night. The Lady Cubs finished the first half of district with a 5-2 record, with their only losses to state ranked Shallowater and Idalou.
The Lady Cubs started the night strong, taking a ten point lead after the first quarter behind some strong shooting from Dabria Blackwell and Lindsey Herrera, who scored 16 of the Lady Cubs 19 points in the first quarter. The second quarter was filled with fouls as Ashley Ramirez, Dabria Blackwell and Deja Johnson found themselves with three fouls each. The Tigerettes took advantage of the foul trouble and outscored the Lady Cubs 11-8, but still trailed 27-20 at the half.
The Tigerettes continued to challenge the Lady Cubs in the second half, slowly chipping away at the Lady Cubs lead, getting within 3 points with under a minute to play in the third quarter. Ashley Ramirez hit a three point shot to finish the quarter, giving the Lady Cubs a six point lead heading into the 4th. It was back and forth in the final quarter with each team trading baskets until the Tigerettes hit back to back three pointers and found themselves within one point of the Lady Cubs 45-46 with 1:40 left to go in the game. At this point in the game it seemed as if the Lady Cubs could not hold off another attack, however the Lady Cubs dug deep and took over, going on an 8-0 run to finish game, claiming the victory by a score of 54-45.
The Lady Cubs were led in scoring by Dabria Blackwell with 19 points and 5 rebounds, followed by Lindsey Herrera’s 11points and 2 rebounds, and Morgan Silva’s 11 points and 8 rebounds. Deja Johnson finished with 6 points, Ashley Ramirez with 5 and Tia Johnson with 2.
