Lady Cubs fall to Monterey in season opener. The Brownfield Lady Cubs opened up their basketball season with a hard-fought loss to Monterey’s 5A team. It was a defensive battle to start the game and the Lady found themselves in foul trouble early, with 6 fouls by the end of the first quarter. Both teams were able to get some points on the board and at the end of one it was a 12-12 tie. The second quarter started off slowly, until the Lady Cubs’ committed their seventh foul of the half which sent Monterey to the line for a 1-and1 shot. The Lady Cubs struggled from only scoring an additional 7 points in the second quarter, ending the first half with a score of 19-22 for Monterey.
In the second half the Lady Cubs trailed by as many as 7 points, but managed to pull within three points at the end of the third quarter with some well executed 3-point shots, making the score 33-36. The fourth quarter started fast and furious with both teams scoring multiple 3-pointers. The Lady Cubs bounced back, bringing the score to a 46-46 tie. Both teams continued to fight, pulling the winning score back and forth. Monterey scored a 3-pointer, followed by the another Lady Cub foult, sending Monterey to the line for a free-throw, finishing out the game with a score of 49-53 for Monterey.
The top scorers for the Lady Cubs were lead by Dabria Blackwell with 16 points, followed by Gaby Fields and Deja Johnson with 10 points each. At the end of the game Coach Wyatt stated that Monterey is a high quality opponent. She knew they would be a challenge, which is why it was decided that Monterey should be put on the schedule. The Lady Cubs played hard and executed their plays well. She was very pleased with the team’s efforts and felt that the team can learn from the little mistakes. After a couple more games, Coach Wyatt feels that the team will do really well for the season. (Story by Morgan Minshew)
The Lady Cubs next game was a much different outcome as they defeated the Lady Mats of Estacado 53-26 to even their season record at 1-1.
The Lady Cubs were cold from the field to start the game missing multiple lay-ups and wide open shots but were able to take a lead 13-9 after the 1st quarter. The Lady Cubs finally got hot to end the half and took a 28-15 lead into the locker room.
The second half was all Lady Cubs as they came out and scored 8 unanswered points and never looked back taking a commanding 43-22 lead after the 3rd. The Lady Cubs defense then shut down the Lady Mats only allowing 4 points in the 4th quarter which helped claim them their first of hopefully many victories this season.
The Lady Cubs were led in scoring by Gabi Fields with 15 points followed by Tia and Deja Johnson with 10. Debria Blackwell pitched in 9 points as well.
Head Coach Michelle Wyatt stated after the game that she was proud of the way the Lady Cubs came out and played. “The girls struggled early but continued to shoot and eventually they started going in.” “We played great defense and showed multiple looks from man to a zone while also being able to get some turnovers with our press” “We are young and still have a lot of growing to do but we are getting better each week” said coach Wyatt.
