In what some would consider just a normal everyday playoff game victory as something simple, one would have to think again, especially after one of the greatest endings that the Lady Cubs has ever had. The #5 Lady Cubs avenged their 2020 Regional Quarterfinal loss to #6 Idalou upending them 53-51 to win the Area Round Championship in last night’s matchup at the LCU RIP.
In the 1st period both teams came out ready to play. #11 Dabria Blackwell would have the first whistle of the night by being called on a charge. Then #31 Tia Johnson would be called for a foul under the Idalou basket. Idalou would strike first going 1 for 2 from the charity stripe. The Lady Cubs brought the ball down the court and ran their offense with #5 Lindsey Herrera busting a 3 pointer and taking a quick lead 3-1. However the Idalou offense would quickly tie the game 3-3 with 6:24 in the 1st period. Brownfield would get back on offense but would turn the ball over and Idalou would capitalize on that scoring 2 more. #33 Deja Johnson would lift the Lady Cubs into the lead 6-5 with her 3 pointer. Idalou would match the 3 pointer and was up again 8-6 with 4:49 in the 1st. However Brownfield would tie it up 8-8 with Deja’s 2 point put back. Idalou would regain their offense and turned the ball over with #15 Gabi Fields floating up 2 points and taking the foul. Gabi would put the extra point in making the three point play the old fashioned way and again taking the lead 11-8. Idalou would also capitalize on a couple of Brownfield’s turnovers by getting back-to-back shots and taking the lead 12-11. Once again the Lady Cubs got back on offense and Deja took a foul and would go 2 for 2 at the foul line and the Lady Cubs taking the lead 13-12 with a 1:04 in the 1st. Idalou would drive the ball down court, but Brownfield would not have any of that and Dabria would place one more in the bucket extending their lead 15-12 ending the 1st period.
The second period was a lot like the first with both teams going back and forth with the lead. Idalou would again strike first by sailing a 3 pointer and tying the game 15-15. Idalou would take the rebound from Brownfield and throw up another 3 pointer to extend their lead 18-15 with 6:37 in the 2nd. Lady Cub #3 Ashley Ramirez came up with a 3 pointer tying the score to 18-18. Idalou would set up their offense and take a jump shot and making the field goal and the score was 20-18 Idalou. Idalou would get a 4-0 run against the Lady Cubs bringing their lead over Brownfield 24-21 with 3:33 in the 2nd. The Lady Cubs got back on offense and Gabi was fouled with a jump shot. She went to the foul line and put 2 more in the bucket, however Idalou still kept the lead 24-23. The Lady Cubs would take away a rebound from Idalou and allow Dabria to bust a 3 pointer and Brownfield taking the lead 26-24 with 55 seconds left in the 2nd. But Idalou struck back with their own 3 pointer going into halftime with the lead over Brownfield 27-26.
The 3rd period the Lady Cubs would take command most of the period. Tia would get 2 point under the basket and Gabi would make a jump shot leading Idalou 30-27. Idalou would get 2 more points but Brownfield still led 30-29 at the 4:51 mark in the 3rd. Dabria would drop another 3 pointer extending the Lady Cubs lead 33-29. Deja got fouled on a layup and would go to the foul line dropping another point. The Lady Cubs would then take advantage of an Idalou turnover and Dabria would hit her third 3 pointer and allow Brownfield to lead by eight. Gabi again would get fouled under the basket and put one more point on the board with the Lady Cubs leading by nine 38-29 with 2:05 in the 3rd. After an 8-0 run from the Lady Cubs, Idalou would finally get 2 points on the board with Brownfield leading 38-31 with 1:42 in the 3rd. With .2 seconds in the 3rd Dabria would foul Idalou’s #10 on a three point shot while making it. #10 would end up receiving a technical foul and would go to the line to get one shot for the foul on her, however the shot did not go in. Coach Wyatt would send Tia to the line for the technical shots. Tia made one and the Lady Cubs were leading at the end of the 3rd period 39-34.
On to the fourth period where both teams would not give up. Idalou began the scoring with 2 points. Once back on offense the Lady Cubs drove the ball down and Dabria would knock down her fourth 3 pointer of the night extending their lead 42-36. Idalou would get back on the board with two more points. Coach Wyatt had the Lady Cubs slow down and make their shots and Lindsey did just that with a 2 point jump shot and Brownfield in the lead 44-38 with 6:00 left in the game. Idalou would get to go to the foul line and drop 2 points, however Brownfield drove the ball down and set up their offense for Lindsey to get another 2 points leading Idalou 46-40 with 4:00 left in the game. Brownfield would foul again and place Idalou at the charity stripe making both shots. Coach Wyatt would call a timeout to make some adjustments. Dabria would be fouled but could not get the shot, however Deja got the rebound and the put back for 2 points and Brownfield was leading 50-44. Idalou would get fouled and get one point from the line. Lady Cubs still led 50-45. Again Idalou would get fouled and was sent to the line making both free throws with Brownfield in the lead 50-47 with 1:30 left in the game. One more time Idalou would get fouled with 55 seconds left and get the two free shots, now the score 50-49 Lady Cubs. Brownfield would get back on offense and turn the ball over by way of the 10 second violation in the back court. Idalou would scramble for 2 more points with 10 seconds left and gain a 51-50 lead. Coach Wyatt would take the timeout. The Lady Cubs would inbound the pass and get past mid-court where Dabria would pass inside to Lindsey and she would get it off to Gabi for the 3-pointer. As Gabi shoots the 3, the buzzer sounds and Idalou’s #22 fouled Gabi on the 3 point shot. The officials would place one second on the clock and Gabi would knock down all three free throws, essentially clinching the Area Round Championship game 53-51.
When asked about the 1:30 left in the game Coach Wyatt said, “this is a game of runs… its always going to be that. We just always need to keep our minds into it and know that we can win.” During the timeouts Catch Wyatt emphasized the lead or a one possession game. “I said to them during the timeouts that as long as we still got the lead or its a one possession game… we always think we can win. We just need one shot at the basket and Gabi got fouled.” Coach Wyatt said. She also went on to say that the girls have worked real hard at this and they got better, as they should have, throughout the past year, plus she is very proud of them.
Due to the extreme weather conditions, the Bi-District matchup between Lamesa and Alpine has not been played yet. Once that game has been put into the books that winner will go on to face Childress in the Area Round and the team who wins that game will play the Lady Cubs in the Regional Quarterfinals.
