Making a Difference

You just never know where your day is going.

Last Sunday morning, our pastor preached on “Interruptions.” He lost his son in an accident less than a month ago. This was his first Sunday back with us.

In his sermon, he talked about the interruptions of life. The big interruptions. His message was about how we respond to what life brings us. No one is immune to these interruptions. We have all had them. He said the issue is not that we have them, instead it is how we choose to handle them.

He then went on and gave three separate responses we see to these interruptions of life. One being resentment. One being indifference about it. And the last response was that of walking by faith.

He used scriptures and personal experience. I sat there with tears in my eyes thinking about what a great message that had been for us and how difficult it must have been for him to deliver it. It truly was a moving, meaningful sermon.

At 5:15 that afternoon, I got what we call a “tone out.” Being in the media, we get notifications of accidents and fires, etc. There was an accident just about 8 miles from my house. I got there fairly quickly. What I saw broke my heart. Children had died in this accident. Three of them. All under the age of 12. The father was being taken to the hospital.

I noticed a young woman standing a distance away, so I went over to check on her. She was the girlfriend of the man driving the car. She had been behind him and they were on their way home after a weekend with all the kids. She was horribly upset, as you can imagine. I ended up spending about two hours with this woman. I prayed with her. I held her hand. But miraculously, I heard Dr. Hart’s words from the morning message coming out of my mouth. I used his words to offer comfort and hope to this one. Only, and Dr. Hart would agree, they weren’t his words. They were God’s.

I had no clue at 11a.m. on Sunday morning, that by 5:30 that afternoon I would be using those words that I had just heard to offer comfort. I had no clue, but God did.

My point is this, you never know where your day is going. You never know what will be placed in front of you. Go out prepared and ready to be God’s person wherever you land. We have no clue what opportunity might present itself or when. We have to be prepared to share the message of God’s love and God’s comfort to those with whom we come in contact.

We are called to be His people. Listen when He speaks. Go where He sends. It will make a difference.
