Making a Difference

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with one of Texas’ finest. A member of the Texas Highway Patrol. A fine group. We were visiting about a difference of opinion. Let me plead my case.

I was coming into town from the west. The speed limit is 75 until it isn’t. It goes to 60, then to 50, then to 40 as you get into town. It is my opinion, and the opinion of many who come in from the west, that the speed changes too early. It should stay 75 and then go to 60 about where the 50 sign is, and then gradually change after that. I make a very valid point. I have several who will back me up on this opinion. But, the fact remains, as the intrepid officer reminded me, it is just my opinion. It is not the law.

Just because I want it to be right, does not make it right. Just because I drive that road daily, sometimes numerous times a day, and consider myself somewhat of an expert on the traffic flow and pattern, the facts do not change. If the law says it is wrong, it is wrong. My opinion does not matter.

This is something we see so much in our world today. We see folks trying to change what God called wrong, and make it right. Just because it is your opinion that this particular thing should be right, does not make it right. If God ever called it wrong, it is wrong to this day. Your opinion does not matter. This is a hard concept for people who really want to run at full speed straight into sin and call it okay. It doesn’t matter what you think. It is still sin.

We can’t just decide that we want to change God’s law. It doesn’t work that way. God’s laws are designed to protect us, usually from ourselves. These laws were set by a loving God who knows the future and can see where our current path will take us. They were written by a God who knew what we would choose but continues to love us anyway and offer us forgiveness. This God knows what the consequences of our continued sin will be. He desperately wants us to choose right, but He gives us free choice. That free choice is what gets us into trouble.

We have to intentionally choose to follow God and His commands. We have to intentionally decide that His way is the best way, even if it doesn’t match what we want to do. God’s law is everlasting and eternal. In Malachi 3:6, God says, “I, the Lord do not change.” And He means it. Again, if He ever called it wrong, it is wrong today. Social media cannot change that. The political agenda cannot change that. Your wants cannot change that, and your opinion cannot change that.

Make a commitment today to follow God’s way. Follow Him all the way. I am so glad that my opinion does not change God’s mind. We are all blessed by this unchanging God. Follow Him. It will make a difference!
