Making a Difference

As we continue to live in this new normal, one thing that has been such a blessing is the amount of sermons and church services available on Facebook and the internet. I have listened to some preachers that I have never gotten to hear before and also listen to my own preacher who I love so much. I was listening to my Bro. Matt yesterday and I absolutely loved what God said through him. So, I am going to steal from him for this column.

As long as this pandemic continues to disrupt our lives, one thing is certain – God is going to continue to work. There have been so many changes around us in the way we do things. And not all these changes are bad. I hear people say often how much they are loving seeing families out walking together. I see pictures of families playing board games together. Now I am seeing families working on their schoolwork together. The family will be strengthened through this. Of this, I have no doubt.

But, we as Christians have a task during this time and this is what Matt talked about yesterday. Using Ephesians 5:15 – 21, he listed five things we need to be about daily. The first thing was to Feed the spirit, not the flesh. We need to be about doing those things that build us up as Christians, and avoid those things that don’t add to what God is trying to accomplish during this time.

The second thing he mentioned was that we need to Build up our community. We need to be an encouragement to those around us. We need to be that voice of hope and reason in a world that seems bent on spreading rumor and negativity.

Thirdly, we need to Worship the Lord. We need to spend time with Him in prayer and in His Word. We need to be singing hymns of praise to Him The fourth thing was to Give thanks to the Lord. Wait. What? Yes. Give thanks to Him during this time and for this time. This is an amazing time of God! He is working and doing so much around us. We need to be so thankful for Him and for all He is doing here.

Lastly, we are to Serve others in every way we can. We need to put others first. We need to look at the world with His eyes and find ways to help and ways to serve. And yes we need to stay home and stay away from other people as much as we can to help stop the spread of this virus. That is putting others first. But that does not mean we cannot still serve.

Yes, I know very well how trying these days are and will be. I know the economic impact this is having. But, I also know the One who calms the storm. And this One continues to hold us in His mighty hand and call us by name. He knows what is coming and He is ready for that.

There are so many out there who do not know the Savior. As Christians, we must be the light in this world. As Christians, we can do no less than to be sure that this hurting world knows Jesus. Be the one who makes a difference today. Put aside any negative thoughts you might have and step up and serve the world with the grace that only comes from knowing the Father. It will make a difference!
