“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is firmly on You, because he trusts You.” Isaiah 26:3
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
These few verses are just a few of many in the Bible that encourage us to pursue peace in our lives. God freely gives peace as just one of the jillion blessings He offers us so easily. But this one is hard for us to grasp. We live in a world that is anything but peaceful. How are we supposed to have peace when the world around us seems bent on self-destruction?
The secret to peace is really not a secret at all. In fact, this secret is one that Christians should be shouting from the rooftops! Peace is at your fingertips. Peace does not have to be some dream waiting out there. Peace is right in your very own hands, as long as your hands are also holding to the Father’s hands.
The very first verse says we are called to peace. That means we were made for peace. Oh sure, there always going to be wars. There are always going to be conflicts. There are always going to be family issues or friend issues or work issues. There is always going to be financial difficulty. There is always going to be lost jobs. There is always going to be death. But, there is also always going to be peace.
Isaiah says that we will be kept in perfect peace when our mind is firmly on the Savior. That means that no matter what is going on around us, when we have firmly fixed our minds on Him, we will still have that sense of peace that everything will be okay. After all, that verse ends with Jesus saying He has overcome the world.
I have said repeatedly that nothing that happens in our lives is a surprise to God. He knew it was all coming. He knows what is waiting for us right around the corner. That is why He so desperately wants us to walk the path with Him! He knows! What peace there is in understanding that this God who created the heavens and all that is in it and the earth and all that is here also knows what is waiting for me this day! He knows already if my heart is going to broken. He knows already if my heart will soar with pure joy. He knows! That thought alone brings peace to my heart and tears to my eyes, even as I write what I already knew.
I said earlier that we are encouraged to pursue peace. To pursue is to chase after something. If you have lost your wallet, you are pursuing that wallet with all that you have. All you identity is in that wallet. Probably cash and credit cards are in that wallet. You do not want to lose that. Running after peace should be the same way. Only peace is not elusive. You don’t have to look under couch cushions. It is right in your hands, again as long as your hands are holding tightly to the Savior. And we hold tightly to Him by spending time in His Word. By spending time talking with Him. By spending time listening for His voice of peace and comfort and reassurance that all will be okay.
We talk a lot these days about the “new normal.” We are not sure what this new normal will look like. We kinda miss our old normal. But what if, in my new normal it meant that I was walking more closely with the Savior, reading my Bible more, spending more time with other Christians, and spending more time in prayer? What if I decide that I will be the definer of my own new normal? What if I decide that my new normal is one of peace in my heart and one of spreading that peace to those around me who are looking so hard for something to hold on to?
That puts a whole new spin on “new normal” doesn’t it? What if we used this new normal to be a time we are going to begin to really and truly make a difference in the world around us? This world is crying out for Jesus.
Begin today to make a difference through Him for the hurting world around us. Grab hold of peace and then share it with the world.
