Have you ever watched a cutting horse work? Or been on a cutting horse? They are amazing. Cutting pits a horse against a cow in a battle of wills. Horse and rider must move quietly into a herd of cattle, cut one cow from the herd, drive it to the center of the arena and “hold” it away from the herd.
The ideal picture of a cutting horse is one of polished concentration and split-second response to the action of the cow. Once he lowers his hand, the rider’s role seems diminished, and it can look like the horse is working completely on his own. In reality, that illusion comes from a harmony of movement and a blending of responses between horse and rider.
This is a perfect picture of how we ought to be with God. We basically just need to get on the horse and let him work. With God, we need to hop on board and let Him take us where He needs us to go. But, we also need to work with Him. We don’t need to be trying pick up the reins and change the direction. He knows what needs to happen. We just need to let Him take us there. We need to trust Him enough to let go of the reins and ride.
But the other side of that is that we need to be involved. Like the description says above, if we are truly working along side the Master and truly following Him, we will look like a harmony of movement as we bring others to know Him. But, harmony is the key word. We have to be committed to following Him.
God’s will is perfect and true. God’s will takes us where He needs us to be to do the work He has in front of us to do. We don’t ever need to worry about picking up the reins. We just need to hop on and ride with Him for all we are worth. We need to trust Him to cut those things out of our life that don’t need to be there. We trust Him for the ride. We trust Him for the guidance.
Look up a video of a good cutting horse. You will be amazed as they work. Then think about your life with God. Let God take the lead in your life. It will make a difference.
