When my kids were very young, I think Kyle was less than two, and Kristy was close to four years old, I took them to a Mother’s Day Out program for a day. When I went back to pick them up, Kyle was holding on to Kristy’s Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader jacket my dad had gotten her. I asked them why he had the jacket and their answer just amazed me.
They said Kyle would not stop crying so they went to get Kristy. Kirsty went in the nursery area with him, but she didn’t want to stay there all day so, the workers told me that Kristy told Kyle, “I will leave my jacket with you. As long as you have my jacket, you know that I am still here and haven’t left you. You are not alone.” They told me he quit crying and began to play with the toys, always keeping that jacket right beside him. Amazing.
It amazes me that Kristy could think like that at that age and that Kyle could understand enough to be comforted and secure just by holding her jacket.
This is the perfect picture of how the Holy Spirit is in our lives. When the Savior lived among the people as a man, He was a comfort to them. When He gave His life on the cross, they were confused. He told them He was sending a comforter to them. One who would remain with them always. One that would bring them comfort and peace. One who would show them the promise of His love for them.
The Bible says, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever,” (John 14:16) These words are true. We do have the Comforter, the Holy Spirit who is with us daily, in all things. He waits to guide us and to bring us comfort and peace.
Just like Kyle knew all was well when he was holding Kristy’s jacket, we can know all is well through the promise of the Savior of the One that would never leave us or forsake us.
The passage in John 14 goes on, “I will give you the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
He lives in you and with you. Daily comfort. Daily guide. Daily fulfillment of God’s promise to His kids.
Are you living a life comforted by the Holy Spirit living in you? It is available to you. You just have to receive Jesus as your Savior, and the Holy Spirit comes right along with Him. Trust me. It truly does make a difference.
