It has been since the 2007 – 2008 Basketball season that Terry County fielded all three boys’ basketball squads in the playoffs. The Cubs won the District 3-3A Title last week with their win over Dimmitt, Wellman-Union won the runner-up position in District 7-1A, with Meadow taking the third seed out of District 7-1A. However, tonight, Friday February 19, the two small schools will see the hardwood in their Bi-District matchups as Brownfield will sit on the sideline waiting to find out who will be the 4th seed out of District 4-3A.
Wellman-Union in the past 20 seasons has made the playoffs only six times and the last time they won a Bi-District Championship was in the 2007-2008 season when they upended New Home 55-36, but would fall in the Area Round to State Semi-Finalist Paducah. Of the six times going to the playoffs in the past 20 years WU has won just two playoff games.
This is the third season in row that the Wildcats punched their ticket to the post season, and they are hoping for a different outcome than the past two. Wellman-Union will take on Klondike this evening at 7:30 at the DAG in Denver City. The Wildcats are looking to avenge their Bi-District loss against Klondike from last season. It will be a tough game for the Wildcats because Klondike came out of District 8-1A where Borden Co. and Sands are both ranked in the top 25. Also, Klondike had only lost by a total of 40 points in four games with Borden Co. and Sands.
Look for Coach Bell to have the Wildcats play a solid defense and slow the offense down. The Wildcat starting five has been hitting on all cylinders and playing well together. With Christian Rios’ 3 pointers, Rylan García’s put-backs and rebounds, Carson Sessums’ inside game, Brason Salas’ break-aways, and Tony Loewen’s ability to score at the right time, the Wildcats can come home with a win.
The Meadow Broncos had to fight hard to get back into the playoffs after a two-year drought. At the beginning of district play, their playoff hopes seemed vanished when they had three straight losses to Wellman-Union 46-41, Whiteface 64-59, and Whitharral 66-19. However the Broncos would comeback and go on a four game winning streak taking down Dawson, Loop, WU, and Whiteface before losing to the eventual district champs Whitharral 60-51.
The Broncos will take on #25 Sands this evening at O’Donnell with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff. The past 20 seasons Meadow has done well in the playoffs. They have been there 15 times and had 13 seasons in a row going to the playoffs and winning 16 playoff games. Coach Flores would like to get back to winning in the post season and this could be the chance, especially with seniors Brady Caswell and Ramon Rodriguez who are hungry for a post season victory.
Other things to look at. Sophomore Wes Woodard will need to attack the basket and get some put-backs and look for him to shine with rebounds tonight. Watch sophomore Jimmy German get some fast breaks with some easy layups which could determine the outcome. Coach Flores’ defense will also need to play tough without fouling, because this will shake Sands offense.
