Mental mistakes along with lack of hitting at key spots continue to plaque the Mustangs as they have dropped back to back district games leaving them with a 1-3 district record.

After coming up short to Roosevelt 8-5 in extra innings on Saturday the Mustangs came back and dropped a 5-2 game to Brownfield on the Cubs home field Tuesday.

Two walks along with two hit batsman led to 4 of the Cubs runs in the Brownfield loss. Broedy Burris was sailing along setting down the first 8 batters he faced. But he walked the number 9 batter, hit the leadoff hitter and that was followed by a towering double to straight away centerfield that brought in the first two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Another walk in the bottom of the 4th along with a blob single down the right field line added one more run.

The Mustangs did come back to tie things up in the top of the 4th inning. Cameron Garcia led off the inning with a homerun over the left field fence and two batters later Ivan Villarreal scored a throwing error. But that would be the last of the runs scored for the Mustangs.

The Cubs broke the tie with a homerun of their own in the bottom of the third inning.

Burris went five and a third innings allowing just three hits, a single, double, and homerun, and all five runs. He struck out 7, issued two walks and hit two batters. Luis Rodriquez came in and finished out the game striking out the last two batters.

In the Roosevelt the Mustangs grab an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning only to see the Eagles came back with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. The Ponies came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 4-3 lead but Roosevelt regained the lead with 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The Mustangs did come up with a single run in the bottom of the 7th only to see the Eagles score 3 in the top of the 8th inning.

The Ponies outhit Roosevelt 7-4, but couldn’t come up with the key hit when they needed it. They stranded 6 runners.

James Chatham and Jeremy Castillo both had two hits while Braden McGary, Ivan Villarreal, and Broedy Burris all had 1 hit. The Mustangs struggled at the plate with 11 strikeouts.

Shabby Roosevelt fielding led to 3 unearned Mustang runs. McGary and Villarreal had one RBI each.

Cameron Garcia went the first five innings giving up 3 runs on 1 hit, struck out 10 and walked 4. Burris went the final 3 innings giving up 5 runs on 3 hits, struck out 2 and walked 5.

The Mustangs will host Slaton in a 12 noon start on Saturday and then travel to Idalou for a 4:30 start on Tuesday.
