The Mustangs opened district play last week with two big wins over Abernathy and Slaton.

After being canceled two times against Abernathy the Mustangs used a big first inning on Friday in route to a 15-4 win on the Antelopes home turf. Uriel Rodriquez opened the game with a solid single to left field on the first pitch of the game and before that half inning came to a halt the Mustangs were up 9-0 to quiet the homefield fans.

Abernathy came back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the 1st but the Mustangs run-ruled the home town team with 6 more runs in the top of the 4th inning.

The Antelopes could not catch up with Luis Rodriquez’s fast ball or master his big breaking ball as the hard throwing senior went 4 2/3 innings to earn the win. Draven Blanco, who got the start against Slaton the next day, finished out the game after Abernathy loaded the bases in the bottom of the 5th inning by striking out the cleanup hitter Timms to end the game.

Darron Pacheco, Uriel Rodriquez, and Luis Rodriquez paced the Mustangs with two hits each. Braden McGary had a big 3-run homer over the right field fence to highlight the six run 4th inning. Irving Mijares and Mario Sanchez had one hit each to account for one and two RBI’s respectively.

Rodriquez gave up four runs on four hits, struck out 10 and walked two. Blanco had the one strike out to end the game.

The Mustangs defense had no errors while Abernathy finished with seven errors that led to 11 unearned runs.

In the Slaton game it was once again a big 4th inning to led to the Tigers being run-ruled 12-2. Slaton opened the game with one unearned run on two Mustang errors in the top of the first inning. The Ponies came back with two runs in the bottom of the first after Uriel Rodriquez opened the game with a double and was brought home when Luis Rodriquez followed with another double. Blanco then brought home Rodriquez with a single up the middle.

The next three innings turned into a pitcher’s duel even though the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 4th inning. That’s when shortstop Chad Dykes snagged a line drive and quickly doubled up the runner at 3rd. That was followed by the lead off hitter hitting a ground ball to Blanco who took his time and threw out the batter at first.

In the bottom of that same inning Sanchez started off with a deep fly ball to center field for the first out. The next three batters, U Rodriquez, McGary, and L Rodriquez all drew walks loading the bases. Mijares followed with a deep fly to left that scored one run, Blanco hit a double to center field that plated two more runs, Pacheco followed with a single up the middle, Enrique Banuelos also singled, Sanchez hit a double to left center, and U Rodriquez doubled and then came across home plate on a passed ball for the 9th run of the inning and a 11-2 DC lead.

After the Mustangs once again loaded the bases in the bottom of the 5th Dykes scored the run-ruled winning run on a pass ball for the 12-2 final score.

Banuelos, Blanco, and U Rodriquez all finished with two hits and L Rodriquez, Mijares, Pacheco, and Sanchez all finished with one hit.

Blanco went the distance for the Mustangs giving up 2 runs that included the unearned run in the first inning, two hits, struck out three and issued no base on balls.

The Mustangs committed four errors while Slaton had two.

The Mustangs upped their season record to 11-4 to go with their 2-0 start in district.

Up next will be road trips to Littlefield on Tuesday and Brownfield on Saturday. Game time in Littlefield was set for 7 pm and a 12 noon start in Brownfield on Saturday.
