Meadow announces district Superintendent Bric Turner as the new head girls basketball coach.
In most schools, the head coach of any sport is simply a coach, however, at Meadow ISD this next season, Superintendent Bric Turner will take the helm of the head girls basketball coach to take the place of Coach Nic Tarr who went to east Texas for family and personal reasons. Not soon after basketball season was over, here on the South Plains, there were over a dozen head girls basketball coaches positions open, Meadow and Wellman-Union being two of those programs. Turner said he had interviewed a few, however one decided to coach at another school, and the others didn’t quite have the experience he was looking for.

Although Turner is the superintendent, he does have a long history and resume of being a head girls basketball coach in Texas. Turner began his basketball coaching career at Forsan as an assistant in the 1996-1997 season. He then moved on to be the head coach at McCamey staying one year there in the 1997-1998 season, during which McCamey was in the district with Ozona’s powerhouse days. Turner then came north up to Morton where he would spend two seasons 98/99 – 99/00 at the helm. Turner then found himself back as an assistant in the suburbs of the Metroplex at Cleburne for one season where there was some success when the Cleburne girls varsity lost in the Regional Semifinals to the eventual State Champs, Plainview.
Turner didn’t move too far when took the head girls coaching position at Kennedale where he was able to help guide them to their first playoff win in program history. Turner also helped begin a winning tradition for Kennedale girls basketball since they have made it to the playoff every year since Turner became and left as the coach. The program has had 12 district titles, and several playoffs wins. Turner then came back to West Texas and coached the Borden County Lady Coyotes for four-season, during a time when Nazareth, Roby, Sterling City, and Garden City were very tough.
Turner then left 1A Borden Couty and coached at Del Rio, at the time a large 5A school, now a 6A making it to the playoffs both seasons while he was there, and making the playoffs for the first time since the 1993/1994 season. Turner then came back to the South Plains for one season at Tahoka where he led the Lady Bulldogs to the Regional Quarterfinals losing to the eventual State Champs of Smyer. He moved on up to the Panhandle region where he would be the head coach for the Tulia Lady Hornets, helping them secure a Regional Semi-final bid in his first season and making it to the payoff the other two seasons.

Turner went on to the north Texas area and coached one season at Sanger leading those girls all the way to the Regional Semifinals. Turner would turn back west for the last two years of coaching girls’ basketball heading to San Angelo to coach the Central Lady Cats. In Turner’s first season at Central, he led the Lady Cats to a bi-district playoff game, and in his final season at San Angelo, his team did not go to the playoffs.
Of course, Turner then headed to Meadow in 2017 to be the principal of the secondary side of Meadow ISD, and when former Meadow Superintendent Darius Dover left to go to Queen City ISD, Turner stepped up to that position.
While visiting with Turner, he felt there needed to be a more experienced coach for the position. “Well I felt like with this group, they needed an experienced coach,” said Turner. He went on to say, “I’ll probably be a little of a different coach than they’ve ever had. It’ll be fun and I’m looking forward to it… I told them to get ready because you’re going to have a 100% of me on the court and a 100% of me during practice.”
The Meadow Lady Broncos will return five girls, not all started, however all five did see some major time in the games last season. The Lady Broncos will face during district competition this season Amherst, Anton, Cotton Center, Morton, Whiteface, and Whitharral. In the last UIL realignments, UIL moved Meadow north and sent Wellman-Union south. Girls’ high school basketball interschool games begin November 4, 2022.
