With a positive case of COVID-19 cropping up this week at Meadow ISD, their Friday game, which was to be Homecoming, has been cancelled. All Homecoming festivities have been postponed until the week of October 6-9, which will make their game against cross-county rival Wellman-Union Homecoming.
Wellman-Union was to face the Dawson Dragons from just down the road, but Dawson cancelled due to numbers. No word if it is COVID-19 related or not. But there will be a game at the W-U. Coach Sep was able to secure a game with All Saints out of Lubbock and that game is tentatively scheduled for 8 p.m. but, that could change.
In this year of nothing being normal, there is a shortage of six-man officials, so W-U must wait until the officials finish a game being played at Loop, so those same officials can head down the road to Wellman to call another game! At any rate, a Homecoming game should take place on Friday at Wellman-Union, at some point!
The Brownfield Cubs will be heading south to face San Angelo Lakeview in their final tuneup before starting District play a week earlier than anticipated.
The 4A squad from Lakeview will face a bit of a different dynamic in the Cubs this week, as some personnel are being moved around. “I look for us to compete really well against Lakeview. We are ready to read and react on defense this week. Every week we build and last week was no exception. Our guys really fought hard against Big Spring and came up a little short. I was so proud of them all the way through,” stated Head Coach Aarrhon Flores.
Lakeview runs a similar offense to Big Spring and they do lots of things the same way, stated Flores. “We know pretty much what they are bringing and we have a few changes to confront them with. I know we will be ready when we get on that field. I have seen so much growth in our guys.”
Flores talked about how complimentary the Big Spring coaches were about the Cubs. “They texted me and told me they had not played a classier bunch of guys than the Cubs. Their head coach told me he could see what we were trying to do here and it was really working.” Flores went on to say, “We want to win, don’t get me wrong. But we are also in the process of building men here and we can see a difference in these guys on the sidelines and on the field. I can’t say enough good about our boys.”
Game time for the Cubs will be 7 p.m. at Lakeview. Watch TownTalk for updates throughout the evening on all County games.
