Last night news broke that Congressman Mike Conaway of Midland would not seek reelection in 2020. There is a press conference scheduled for today in Midland, where the Congressman is expected to announce he won’t run in 2020. Congressman Conaway is ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, and had served as Chairman shepherding the 2018 Farm Bill into law. He also serves on the House Intelligence Committee and led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He was expected by many to take GOP leadership of that committee in the next few years.
His leaving is a blow to West Texas and the country. On a personal note the Congressman is a Christian Gentleman who lives what he believes and in Washington that is the exception rather than the rule these days. His work on the 2018 Farm Bill made sure we had solid farm policy, and even with Democrats backing away over proposed changes in SNAP his determination saw the bill through.
We will have more on next week’s PAC Show on this breaking story.
