Plains Independent School District just announced that the district will be an AVID district starting in the 2016-2017 school year. AVID stands for Advanced via Individual Determination and operates under a mission β€œTo close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”

AVID was created in 1980 by a teacher who understood that students from all backgrounds can succeed with an opportunity and the right support. Today AVID is implemented in over 4,900 schools in 45 states, the District of Colombia and 16 countries and territories. AVID impacts over 700,000 students in grades k-12 and in 41 post-secondary institutions. AVID will now impact the students of Plains ISD.

AVID emphasizes the following instructional methodologies known as WICOR:

  1. Writing for learning
  2. Emphasis on Inquiry
  3. Collaborative approach
  4. Organization
  5. Reading to learn

AVID provides curriculum resources, which are rigorous, sequential curriculum materials integrating the AVID methodologies in all content areas. AVID provides extensive professional development to prepare teachers and administrators to implement AVID, to incorporate the methodologies in all classes and to build school cultures with high expectations for all students. Finally, AVID utilizes interdisciplinary site teams of teachers, a counselor and administrators to lead AVID implementation and set quantifiable goals for school improvement based on site data. Recruitment for AVID students in grades 5-11 will begin immediately.
