The South Plains Underground Water Conservation District is announcing their annual Rainwater Harvesting Week to be held May 3 – 7.
This annual week serves to make us all more aware for the need to conserve our water. We do not have an endless supply of water and we must all recognize this and work hard to save this vital natural resource.
During Rainwater Harvesting Week, the SPUWCD will be parking their outstanding Education Trailer at the Bicentennial Park across from the Chamber and directly behind Subway. It will be there from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. This highly entertaining trailer features all types of exhibit which clearly show the amount of water we use and how much we waste on a daily basis. You will not want to miss this!
Another big event of the week is the Rainwater Harvesting Workshop to be held on Thursday, May 6. This will begin at 6 p.m. and usually lasts no longer than 30 – 45 minutes. The first 20 who register for this event will receive a free rain barrel and rain chain. You need to call 637-7467 to register for this event. Do it today so you won’t miss out on the rain barrel and rain chain!
Also, on Thursday May 6, the SPUWCD will be celebrating “Lindy Harris Day.” Lindy was the Director of the SPUWCD for many years and recently retired from active working, but not from active water conservation education. She remains dedicated to conservation and will tell anyone she sees about how they can save water. Lindy is a firm believer in rainwater harvesting and uses it at her own home.
Finally, the “Third Annual Every Raindrop Counts” award will be handed out. This award honors someone who is practicing good water conservation at their home or on their farm or even garden. If you know someone you would like to nominate for this award, bring pictures and a description to the SPUWCD no later than Friday, April 30. You can call 637-7467 for more information on this.
This has all been put together with conservation education at the center by the Office employees and the Board of the SPUWCD.
