Texans earn No. 1 national ranking in second NJCAA men’s basketball regular-season poll

Following a perfect 10-0 start to the 2018 season, the South Plains College men’s basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking in the second NJCAA men’s basketball regular-season poll on Tuesday.

Previously ranked second in the country, the Texans have amassed seven wins away from home this season and are 3-0 at the Texan Dome. Averaging 87.1 points per game and shooting over 48 percent from the field, South Plains is led by sophomore big man Gaige Prim whose 22.3 points per game ranks 17th in the country, and also ranks second in the NJCAA with 13 rebounds per game.

Sophomore Trey Wade has recorded double-digit scoring figures in nine games this season for the Texans, averaging over 14 points per game and shooting 54.1 percent from the floor. South Plains closed out the fall semester with back-to-back conference wins over Midland and Frank Phillips College, and will return to the hardwood following the Christmas break against Central Arizona College at 4 p.m. MST in the opening round of the 2018 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout on the campus of Mesa Community College.

Lady Texans ranked 9th in second NJCAA women’s basketball regular-season poll

After amassing a 14-1 record to begin the 2018 season, the South Plains College women’s basketball team cracked the top 10 in the second NJCAA women’s basketball regular-season national poll, coming in at No. 9 on Tuesday.

Previously ranked 11th in the country, the Lady Texans have won 11 straight games including wins over No. 25 Midland and most recently, an 88-48 dismantling of Hill College on Sunday at the Texan Dome. Led by sophomore Keke Hunter who leads the team in scoring with 17 points per game and also ranks first in the NJCAA with 81 offensive rebounds, South Plains is 9-1 on the road this season and a perfect 5-0 at the Texan Dome.

South Plains ranks first in the country in total points with 1331, seventh in the country with 88.7 points per game and fifth in the country allowing just 47.7 points per game on the year. The Lady Texans will return to the hardwood on Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. MST against Cochise College in Tucson, Arizona at the Pima College Classis.
