As soon as summer vacation began, it didn’t seem very long for it to end. All three Terry County school districts, Brownfield ISD, Meadow ISD, & Wellman-Union ISD had all teachers and return back to work on Monday, August 8, 2022. The hustle and bustle have begun for the teachers for the 2022-2023 school year with some new faces and of course those veteran educators.

Brownfield ISD began the day with a convocation and was supposed to have a guest speaker for the staff. However, with the airline industry lacking workers, the guest speaker was unable to make it. That did not deter Superintendent Chris Smith and company as the show must go on. Mr. Smith, administrators, and the school board welcomed the teachers and staff back to work with words of encouragement and reassured them that all the campuses are safe. According to Smith, BISD is fully staffed.

The BISD Board approved the 2022-2023 District Calendar back on April 25, 2022, showing there will be 79,530 minutes of instruction for the students. Wednesday August 17, 2022, is the day students report to classes or as most people know it as “The first day of school”. Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, BISD students and faculty will have holidays (days off) Sept. 5, 2022; Nov. 21-25; Dec. 23, 2022 – Jan. 6, 2023: Feb. 13, 2022; March 13-17, 2023; and April 7, 2022. The last day of school for BISD is May 26, 2023.

Mr. Smith said, “We are very excited for the return of our teachers! They have done so much for our students and our community and they are eager to get back at it. The 2022-2023 school year is going to be a positive ride that we are excited about taking!”

Meadow ISD also had a convocation Monday, Aug 8, 2022, with guest speaker Steve Gomez, Lubbock Christian University Women’s Head Basketball Coach. Like BISD, Coach Gomez, Superintendent Bric Turner, and other administration encouraged the faculty about this upcoming year. Turner stated, “We are excited to see our returning staff and also to see new faces. We expect the 22-23 school year to be one of our best ever.” MISD is fully staffed as well according to Turner.

MISD will have a total of 152 instructional days with elementary having 77,520 minutes of instruction, and secondary having 79,800 minutes of instruction. MISD also has a four-day school week. Students will report to classes on August 16, 2022. MISD holidays/days off include Nov. 23-25, 2022; Dec. 21, 2022 – Jan 2, 2023, and March13-17, 2023, plus the last day of school is slated for May 25, 2023.

Wellman-Union ISD joined the others by having their faculty come back to work on Monday, August 8, 2022, plus a convocation with Brownfield’s Calvary Baptist Church Youth Pastor Matthew Seymore as the guest speaker. Like the other districts, Seymore and the administration were there to encourage the faculty and reassure the safety of the campus.

District Principal Bridget Brown said, “There are exciting things to come from the staff at Wellman Union. We join together in preparation for our students to make this the best year yet! We are looking forward to the first day with our students!” Brown went on to say, “We are excited about getting the new year started! Our focus today and this year is W- Willingness, U – Unity, E – Expectations, H – Honesty, S – Success (Wellman Union Elementary & High School).

WUISD will have 170 days of instruction, with a total of 79,065 minutes of instruction.
