Tennis Team Continues Preparing For District

Both the Mustang and Fillie tennis teams continue tournament play in preparation for the district tournament that will take place in Brownfield on April 11-12.

In the their latest tournament held on the campus of South Plains college in Levelland the Fillies dominated the singles play with Chanie Wingo defeating teammate Taylor Ranney in the finals 6-2, 6-0, just one of three matches the junior dominated that day.

In the first round Wingo defeated a player from Lazbuddie 6-3, 6-2, defeated a player from Farwell in the semi-finals 6-1, 6-4 before defeating Ranney for the championship. Meanwhile Ranney also had two good first rounds defeating a player from Littlefield 8-1, a player from Spur 6-1, 2-6, 10-2 in a super tie breaker before losing to Wingo.

Also having a good singles outing was Jacee Billings. She dropped her first match to Kingdom Prep 6-0, 6-0, came back to defeat Brownfield #2 6-1, 6-1 and then defeated Littlefield #1 8-8 (7-2 in a tie breaker).

In girl’s doubles Marlow Davis and Cas Moore defeated Brownfield #2 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, Lazbuddie 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 and then lost to Brownfield #1 in the finals 8-0. This was the first tournament these two had played together after Jo Moore, who usually plays doubles with her sister, had turned her ankle in the last tournament.

The mixed doubles team of Joel Palma and Xylena Pillai won 4th place. They opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Slaton, lost to Farwell 6-7, 6-1, and 10-3 in the super tie breaker. In the match for 3rd place they came up short losing to Seagraves 8-6.

And in boys doubles Ivan Esquivel and Josh Mills lost 8-2 to Kingdom Prep and 8-6 to Seagraves.
