Terry County Redistricting

by admin

The Terry County Commissioners met with Stan Reid, attorney with Allison, Bass, and Magee, to discuss the redistricting process. This is done after every census is taken to reflect new numbers and ethnic groups.

Preliminary numbers showed that Precinct 1 had way more constituents than any of the others. However, this number did reflect a prison population of 400 at the time of the census. Once those numbers were removed, the Precinct 1 numbers were less skewed. After a series of math projects and trial and error, a map was created that falls within the recommendations of the state. This map also falls within the legal parameters of the ethnicity guidelines.

Now that this map is drawn, a Public Hearing will be held on November 3 at 2 p.m. in the Basement Meeting Room of the Terry County Courthouse. The map will then be voted on in the next Commissioners Court meeting. (November 8)

County Judge Butch Wagner stated, “I think the new map is a good one. I felt like everyone was pretty happy with the new boundaries. Krystal (Valentin, Elections Office Coordinator) helped with it and had some really good knowledge on how to look at the numbers and get it drawn to serve everyone well.”

All Commissioners were present and had input on the map.
