The Texas Senate just cleared the way by a vote of 18-13 for “Constitutional Carry” of a handgun in the State of Texas. House Bill 1927 (HB 1927) which allows open carry of a handgun without a permit was fast tracked through the upper chamber on Wednesday May 5, 2021.
In mid-April the lower chamber passed HB 1927 on a party line vote by 87 to 58. On Tuesday April 27, 2021 Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated he would like to sign this bill into legislation which will allow Texans to carry a handgun without a license. Gov. Abbott told news talk personality Rick Roberts of DFW’s WBAP 820, ”I support it, and I believe it should reach my desk, and we should have ‘constitutional carry’ in Texas,”.
There are 15 states that have legalized constitutional carry and three states that allow limited permit-less carry. Vermont has had constitutional carry since 1791. There are 24 states, including Texas planning to introduce or has already introduced constitutional carry laws in their legislatures.
