Fire Safety StoryTime
At StoryTime today, October 18, 2018, the Plains Volunteer Fire Department joined the StoryTime group for an informational time on fire safety. The time began with the usual calendar and pledges. The book “I’m Brave” by Jim and Kate McMullan was the first book read.
Assistant Chief Wes Holland then joined the group to discuss what smoke does and the importance of crawling under the smoke. Firefighter John was invited to show the children what a fire suit looks like and what sounds an air tank makes. Then a volunteer from the youngsters (Ben) pretended to be lying on the floor as the “patient” while 3 more firefighters (Firefighter Neufeld, Firefighter Adrian, and Firefighter Kass) came in with the hose in a mock “sweep,” showing how the firemen search a home for anyone inside.
After the firefighters took off their helmets, there were still some youngsters shy about getting too close, but a few brave kiddos took a picture with the heroes. Those in attendance today included Kaylin, Henry, Saige, Jedidiah, Nellie, Benny, Lena, Tirzah, Ben, Brit, Reid, and Avery. Because of the steady rain falling, the firemen invited the group to their fire station to see the trucks! So the children also went to visit, seeing all the trucks, and getting Jr Firefighter badges.
