Well, here we are at the end of the girl’s high school basketball regular and district season, well at least for most, because there might some seeding games going on at the end of the week. The season has gone by very fast and now its time to go to the postseason or practice for
The Brownfield Lady Cubs fought hard Friday night against a good Abernathy squad. They dropped to 4-9 in
The #18 Cubs bounced back from their two-point loss from Tuesday’s game against the #9 Shallowater Mustangs by handing Abernathy a 71-60 loss and punching their ticket into the playoffs and is now tied for the runner-up spot in
The #17 Denver City Fillies will launch back into the playoffs next week and they will find out if they can make it further than last season, which would be the actual State Finals. Last season the Fillies ended their season in the 4A State Semi-final game against San Antonio Veterans Memorial in San Antonio. The UIL realignment was somewhat kind to DC but placed the Fillies in the toughest 3A district in the state. The Fillies come off a good win over Slaton on Friday night and now face the Lady Cats at Littlefield. In the first meeting they had the Fillies took care of business with the 45-23 winning score. The only trouble the Fillies really have had this season is with the #3 Idalou Lady Cats and the #8 Shallowater Fillies. Of course, the first game the DC played Shally it went into double overtime and they lost by three points 47-44 and when they went to Shallowater they lost by 11 points 44-33. Against Idalou, the first match-up was a seven-point loss 38-31 and the second go-around was a 10 point loss 49-39. 31 points separate the Fillies from third in district to the district champ. Expect the Fillies to go out on top tonight against Littlefield
Patrick Swazey once said, ” What winning is to me is not giving up, is no matter what’s thrown at me, I can take it. And I can keep going.” This might just be the quote that the Denver City Mustangs have hanging in their locker room. Last Friday I gave you all a scenario of how the Mustangs can get into the playoffs, and so far
Sometimes there are certain teams and schools that just give us heartburn, just ask the Plains Cowgirls and Cowboys when both fell to Sundown. The Cowgirls did a decent job at making the Sundown Roughettes earn their win, especially at Sundown, where the Cowgirls lost 42-38. As for The Seagraves Lady Eagles, they soared past Smyer 52-36. Now both Plains and Seagraves gets another chance at each other tonight. Both played a tough game against each other last time with Seagraves taking the win by a four-point margin 52-48. The Cowgirls really would like this win so that they can seal-up a playoff birth since they and Tahoka are fighting for the last playoff spot. The game is at Seagraves and the Lady Eagles would no more than like to meet up with the Sundown Roughettes this Friday for a seeding game and a chance at the District Title at hand. If Seagraves loses to Plains, then Seagrave will become second and Plains will get a step closer to the playoffs. However, the Lady Eagles are just too much for the Cowgirls.
When the Cowboys and Eagles met up the first time Plains came out on top 64-47. Plains has had a rough time with both Sundown and Tahoka in
The Lady Bulldogs of Tahoka has seen better days and this year they have seen better seasons, just like last year. However, nothing is over until its over. If the Plains Cowgirls lose to Seagraves tonight and the Lady Bulldogs upset Sundown then there will be a tie for the final playoff spot. When the Lady Bulldogs and the Roughettes got together the first time Sundown won 42-31. That is really not a bad loss for Tahoka. With the right mindset and patience they can come out on top, plus also Tahoka will most likely play for fun and try to go out with a bang.
Some would say that this matchup between the Tahoka Bulldogs and Sundown would be the district title game. Not so fast, because Tahoka has that pesky loss to Smyer. While Sundown enjoys a 6-0 district record and Tahoka owns a 3-2 record, needless to say, that Tahoka just wants to win to solidify a playoff spot. The Roughnecks are dominating this district and finally cracked the Top 25 this week and it looks like they are going to slow down either. Tahoka will have to wait till Friday to try to clinch a playoff birth.
The Meadow Lady Broncos will get one more shot at a win tonight when they take on Loop at home. The first time they met in
The Meadow Broncos need to take care business tonight against the Longhorns in order to stay in playoff contention. A win tonight would allow them and Wellman-Union to fight it out for the final playoff spot. The first time these two played Meadow came out on top 46-25 and expect them to do the same, but much better. The Broncos want to Wellman-Union that they mean business.
Well, if you want to see the #2 team in the state in 1A, just come on down to Wellman when the Lady Cats host the #2 and the District 7-1A Champions Ropes Lady Eagles. Back earlier in January, the Lady Eagles put 54-19 win on the Lady Cats. Now Wellman-Union has already clinched a playoff spot and so has O’Donnell. If WU were to upset Ropes tonight then the Lady Cats would automatically be the runner-up in District 7-1A. If they lose, which is a big possibility, they will then play a seeding game against O’Donnell to see who gets that coveted runner-up spot in the playoffs. However, tonight the Lady Cats are focused on the possible upset. Coach McCann and his team will most likely do the same when taking the court tonight, so don’t look for a different offense or changeup. As far as the Lady Cats are concerned, they will most likely slow down the game as much as possible. Ropes will go undefeated in district tonight.
Both Ropes Eagles and the Wellman-Union Wildcats have a lot on the line tonight. With a ropes win they will become the outright District 7-1A Champions. With a loss to the Wildcats, they will share first place with O’Donnell and most likely have a seeding game. When it comes to the Wildcats, if they win, they will still not have clinched a playoff spot. Right now WU sets at 3-3 in district and Meadow sets at 2-4. If WU wins tonight they 4-3 and if Meadow wins tonight they become 3-4, setting up a Friday night must-win game for Meadow to even the district record 4-4 with the Wildcats making them both play a seeding game for the last playoff spot. If WU loses to Ropes tonight, then the game between Meadow and Wellman-Union on Friday evening will be winner take all or winner takes the third and final playoff spot. When the Wildcats traveled over to Ropes last month WU came back home with 19 point loss, 59-40, however tonight the game is at Wellman. The Wildcats can win if they won’t turn the ball over and they make the plays when their defense stills the ball. Ropes should take this one tonight and become the outright District 7-1A Champion.
