Well, here we are, the last week of the regular season of Texas High School Football. As some schools closeout and take on basketball, others will be playoff bound. Let’s take a look at this week’s pairings.

Brownfield Cubs come into the district as the better team on paper, however, district titles are not won on paper. Just ask the DC Mustangs. Brownfield will take on a Kermit team who some would equal to Iowa State in the Big 12. The Yellowjackets can certainly ruin a season for their opponents. Although all four teams in District 1-3A Div. I will go to the playoffs, its all about seeding now. The Cubs as of today sit in the runner-up position with Kermit. If the Cubs win, they will most likely play Slaton for the Bi-District round and Brownfield has already played the Tigers and it was not the game they had hoped for. Kermit sets at 4-4 and Cubs 6-3 and both teams have played DC and Tornillo with a 54-0 Brownfield win over Tornillo and a 3-0 loss to DC. Kermit also split the wins and losses to both teams with a 35-6 win over Tornillo and a 49-14 loss to DC. Brownfield should be the District Runner-up.

Brownfield 48, Kermit 14

Denver City only needs to beat the 0-8 Tornillo Coyotes to win District. Needless to say that the Mustangs should win easily tomorrow night and become the outright District Champs. They will either play Littlefield or River Road in Bi-District.

Plains will travel to Seagraves in a classic 2A matchup. Both schools have competed with each other for decades. There is a lot riding on this game tomorrow night. It is, who will be the fourth seed in the playoffs. Both teams have losses to Sudan, Farwell, and Bovina, also both teams have beaten Springlake-Earth. Now its time to throw out records and scores from the previous games, because this will mean a lot more than just a seat in the Playoffs. Seagraves has had seven straight postseasons and they are going to want it again.

Tahoka took care of business last Friday to at least keep the runner-up position in District 4-2A Div.II. Two weeks ago the Bulldogs fell to Ralls 42-35. The Bulldogs travel north to Lockney to get their last win of regular season and secure their 2nd place finish in district. Tahoka will either Clarendon or Vega in Bi-District.

Meadow will get one more shot tomorrow night at a possible win. With virtually no home games this season, several injuries and a lot of youth, the Broncos have been dealt a hard blow. A 1-7 overall record is very uncharacteristic of Meadow and they will hope to capitalize on the 2-7 Antelopes of Whiteface. Expect the Broncos to come out and play with a lot of heart.

Ropes and Wellman-Union have a storied history, probably not as much like Meadow and Ropes, but none the less a storied history. Tomorrow night they get to end the regular season with hopes of a district title or rolling out the basketballs. With Ropes they can still lose and go to the playoffs, with WU, they need to win and need to win big like a 24 point win over Ropes to have a chance. However, the Wildcats are down to seven players and won’t have enough juice in them to keep from getting the mercy rule applied to them.
