Wellman-Union ISD took time out yesterday Monday May 3, 2021 to have a little fun and watch some football… well “Powder Puff” football. The WU Junior High girls, High School girls, and the majority of the female staff took each other on in 6-man tag football.
The WUJH girls & WUHS girls would hit the field first. The HS had first possession and moved the ball several times, however the JH ended up stopping them on a 4th and long run. The ball was turned over on downs and the spunky JH also moved the ball against the HS. The JH went for a long pass and got the 1st down. However the HS defense stood strong against the JH. At the end of the first half the teams were tied 0-0.
In the second half the JH received the ball first allowing the HS to put their defense to the test. Although the JH gained some yards off a long pass, the HS stood their ground again. Both teams would turn the ball over on downs their next possessions with time running out. Finally the HS girls would score with a 15 yard run from Kaley Cavazos. The JH was able to get the ball one more time, but the HS made another stand and won the first game 6-0.
Next up was the Lady Teachers turn to take on a tired HS team. Again the HS would receive the ball first and kept the offense on the ground gaining some major yards. The HS decided they would change things up and pass the ball against the wind and one of the Teachers intercepted the ball but was tagged down pretty quick. Like the other game, both teams would trade possessions by turning the ball over on downs. The score was tied 0-0 at the half.
The second half was a bit different for the HS girls as they came out to play against the Teachers. The HS kept the ball on the ground with Kenzie Harp and Kaley Cavazos running sweeps beating the Teachers on each end. The HS was 3rd and goal when Many Horton caught a short pass in the end zone to take the lead. The Teachers got back on defense where they kept the ball on the ground for a few plays until Coach Gray decided to pass the ball downfield. Kaley Cavazos got the interception and returned it for a 65 yard TD bringing the score now to 12-0 with a minute remaining in the game. The officials of the game Coach Sep, Coach Bell, and Coach Kidd allowed the whole Teacher team out on the field giving them a 12-6 person advantage. However the HS girls continued their dominance on defense and won the game 12-0.
