Say it ain’t so, but it is, as the Wellman-Union Lady Cats Volleyball Team begin district action tonight Tuesday Sept. 7, 2021 against the Rotan Yellowhammers with the first serve slated for 6 p.m. The Lady Cats has had a “middle of the road” start to the season and have played several 2A schools and some 3A & 4A schools. However ,that has not deterred Coach Taylor Skinner and the gang because they feel they can compete with this district.
Last season, the Lady Cats swept Rotan in district, and they look to do the same this year. “We are going to go into this first district game with confidence and execute the small things.” said Coach Skinner. The Lady Cats have had issues with “finishing” games, plus not focusing on the sets to correct teammates. Coach Skinner said, “We have to adjust throughout each set. These girls can win, we just have to adjust.”
UIL places class 1A schools with 2A during district season, then they break off to their respective classes during the playoffs. Wellman-Union will contend with Plains, Post, and Ropes twice this season in district play. Last year the Lady Cats took Plains to five sets, barely losing the fifth set by 3 points. also not to mention the Cowgirls were in the top 15 in state. “Seeing what we’ve accomplished throughout the summer and pre-district I feel when can get back to the playoffs again.” said Coach Skinner.
The Lady Cats took on a tough Wildorado team last season in the bi-district round and lost. However this year’s team remembers the excitement of going to the playoffs and is hungry for a playoff win and to go deep. Setter Mady Horton said, “First we’ll take each game one at a time, and then when playoffs rolls around we’ll do the same. My teammates and I want a gold ball.” The journey begin tonight for the Lady Cats to reach that goal.
